Papia receives diversity abroad award for summer study

Maggie Papia

Fredonia student Maggie Papia has been awarded $1,000 from the SUNY Diversity Abroad Honors Scholarship Program (DAHSP) for a study abroad program in Oaxaca, Mexico this summer.

Ms. Papia is a junior Speech Pathology and Spanish double major and plays for the women's soccer team. During the 2015 spring semester, she studied Spanish language and Ecuadoran culture at the Universidad de Espíritu Santo in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Making a return to a Spanish-speaking country, Papia looks to continue working toward her goal of becoming a bilingual speech language pathologist.

The Diversity Abroad Honors Scholarship Program is administered by the SUNY Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI). The purpose of the award is to support transformative study abroad experiences as students prepare for future careers in increasingly global environments.

In addition to the award from SUNY, she will be receiving an additional $1,000 from the Office of International Education's Ann James Manly Endowment Fund, established through the Fredonia College Foundation, to support her studies.

Students interested in applying in the future for the DAHSP award are encouraged to meet with Erin Willis, assistant Director of Study Abroad and Exchange Programs.
