Whittick receives Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for summer study

Junior Biology major Tamika Whittick.

Fredonia student Tamika Whittick has received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, a $3,500 award, for her study abroad program in Belize City, Belize.

Ms. Whittick is a junior Biology major. She will be interning with the World Pediatric Project (WPP), a non-profit organization that sends pediatric surgeons to Belize to support critically ill children. While working as an intern she will work with staff at the WPP to organize trips, prepare families and children for surgeries and support the medical teams in local hospitals.

Whittick is the second Fredonia student to be awarded the prestigious Gilman scholarship. She was selected from over 3,000 applicants for the summer scholarship program. Students that receive the scholarships can receive up to $5,000 toward their study abroad or internship program expenses.

The Gilman program aims to diversify the students who study and intern abroad. Students receiving a Federal Pell Grant from two-and four-year institutions that plan on studying abroad or participating in a career-oriented international internship for academic credit are eligible to apply.

Students that are interested in applying for the Gilman scholarship should contact Erin Willis, assistant director of Study Abroad and Exchange Programs.
