Music Composition senior wins international competition

Senior Music Composition major John Secunde

John Secunde, a senior from Limerick, Maine, majoring in Music Composition, has won the Novus New Music Inc. Composition Competition. His entry was selected from among 60 submissions submitted by composers from 17 states and 13 different countries.

With the honor, Mr. Secunde will have the opportunity to write a concerto for saxophone and band and receive a premiere performance of that new work by saxophonist Connor Mikula and the West Ottawa High School Band at the Tulip Time Festival, one of the Midwest’s largest festivals, in Holland, Mich., in May 2017.

Secunde, who has studied privately with Dr. Sean Doyle and Dr. Karl Boelter, is currently in the studio of Dr. Andrew Martin Smith. He belongs to ASCAP and the Society of Composers, Inc.

Novus New Music, Inc. is a non-profit (awaiting 501[c][3] approval) dedicated to the enrichment of the saxophone repertoire and the advancement of its artists. It serves as a medium of collaboration between composers and saxophonists, seeking to encourage and enable the creation of new music.

Novus promotes the saxophone as an instrument by commissioning new works, organizing consortiums, providing legal contracts, coordinating performances and organizing financial transactions. While Novus New Music serves saxophonists and composers of all levels, it has a special interest in students and emerging musicians.
