Six students from Fredonia’s Accounting Society had the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and network with peers at the Institute of Management Accountants’ Student Leader Conference held Nov. 10 to 13 in Detroit, Mich.

Ryli Chmiel, Jess Bolsei, Harley Jones, Katlynn Cole, Sawyer Bell and Ryan Balas attended a career fair/networking event, visiting tables staffed by potential employers as well as certified management account review providers, during the first day.

Industry professionals presented educational sessions during the second and third days. Topics of sessions attended by Fredonia students included: “Navigating the Workplace: Tips for Communicating Across Generations,” “Forensic Accounting: How Your Accounting Skills Help Catch The Crooks” and “Leading from the Start.”

Ms. Cole, a senior Public Accountancy major from Red Creek, N.Y., said the trip was a great bonding experience that also provided educational benefits for e-board members.

“We got to learn about a side of accounting that is not emphasized as much as public accounting. We got to meet professionals, ask questions and meet students from other schools,” Cole said. “I think everyone enjoyed their time and we hope that this becomes something that future Accounting Society members can take part in as well!”

Business Administration professors Linda Hall and John Oslavsky accompanied the students on the trip.
