Caparro leads Devils at Houghton meet

Rocky Caparro

Fredonia's Rocky Caparro (Staten Island/Susan E. Wagner) won one event and was second in another at the Houghton December Classic, the first meet of the 2016-17 indoor track and field season.

Caparro won the triple jump in 13.98 meters (45 feet, 10 1/2 inches), a new fieldhouse record, and was second in the high jump behind teammate Nick Serafin (Depew/Depew). Both men cleared 1.95 meters (6 feet, 4 3/4 inches) with Serafin doing so with fewer misses.

Fredonia had a third-place finisher Friday as Merlin Joseph Jr. (Binghamton/Binghamton) took the 3,000-meter run in 9:04.72.

Other second-place performances came from Kyle Brown (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) in the 35-pound weight throw at 15.87 meters (52 feet, 1 inch); Jacob Valley (Fredonia/Lancaster) in the long jump at 6.55 meters (21 feet, 6 inches); and Bobby Cooper (Macedon/Gananda) in the 3,000 meters in 9:08.93.

Fredonians finishing third were Pat Shenal (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) in the mile (4:36.24); Mitchel Paciga (Jeffersonville/Sullivan West) in the high jump (1.90 meters / 6 feet, 2 3/4 inches); and Ethan Francis (Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk) in the 3,000 meters (9:10.68).

The meet was held in Houghton's Kerr-Pegula Fieldhouse.
