Couperus wins Spire high jump

Sarah Couperus

Fredonia's Sarah Couperus (Marion, N.Y./Marion) won the women's high jump Saturday at The Spire Institute Team Challenge.

Couperus, a junior, cleared 1.58 meters -- 5.18 feet -- to top a field of 12 high jumpers and earn 10 first-place points. That accounted for over a quarter of Fredonia's 36 team points, good for ninth in a field of 12 teams.

In addition to Couperus, two other Fredonia women earned individual points by finishing among the top eight in their respective field events. Mikayla Capestrani (Jamestown/Jamestown), a junior, was sixth in the pole vault at 3.07 meters (10.07 feet). Naji McCallar (Buffalo/Hutch Tech), a senior, was sixth in the shot put at 11.05 meters (36.25 feet).

Fredonia earned 15 points in the mile run as four runners finished in the top eight, led by senior Bonnie Binggeli (Walworth/Ruben A. Crillio), who was third with a personal-best 5:28.77. She was followed by fourth-place finisher sophomore Hannah Kurbs (Lockport/Lockport) in 5:29.60, sixth-place finisher sophomore Brenna Donovan (Youngstown/Lewiston-Porter) in 5:31.86, and eighth-place finisher sophomore Carly DeBono (Medford/Patchogue-Medford) in 5:34.49.

Donovan also finished sixth in the 3,000-meter run in 10:56.91 while junior Brittany Feldman (Jamestown/Southwestern), senior Kristen Guarino (Bergen/Byron-Bergen), freshman Kelly O'Hara (Webster/Webster Thomas), and sophomore Emily Maguire (Oakdale/Conneetquot) combined to finish eighth in the 4-by-400 meter relay in 4:22.67.
