Cheatham comes up big in OT

Alexis Cheatham

Down one, Alexis Cheatham's (Lockport/Lockport) four-point play in overtime proved to be the game's biggest play as the Fredonia women's basketball team held on for a 73-70 victory at Brockport. Cheatham missed a potential game-winning layup as time ran out in regulation, but made up for it with seven points in the extra frame.

The Devils made four three pointers in overtime -- two by Cheatham and two by Sarah Sweazy (Rochester, N.Y./Rush Henrietta). Jacque Law (Machias/Pioneer) converted both free throws with 11 seconds left to play, and the Devils blocked both of Brockport's final two shot attempts to secure the win.

In regulation, the Devils led 58-56 when Brockport's Emily Nestler grabbed a rebound and put it back with 19 seconds on the clock to force overtime.

Cheatham finished with 19 points, including five three-pointers, and Law added 17. Kathryn Halloran (Angola/Immaculata) and Sweazy added 11 points apiece, with Halloran dishing out five assists. Jenna Einink (Westfield/Chautauqua Lake) dominated the boards with 16 rebounds. As a team, the Devils held a 53-38 advantage.

Bailey Pratt led Brockport (5-13 overall, 4-7 SUNYAC) with 16 points, and Hannah Rehbaum had 15.

Fredonia never lead by more than four points the entire game. Brockport's biggest lead of eight, 51-43, came with 2:09 left in the third quarter.

Fredonia improves to 13-5, and 8-4 in the conference.

The Devils return home Saturday for a 6 p.m. tip off vs. Buffalo State. Steele Hall will also play host to a National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration.
