Trio contribute chapter in SUNY Press publication, ‘Shared Governance in Higher Education’

The first chapter of “Shared Governance in Higher Education, Vol. 1” published by SUNY Press, was written by Associate Professor of Music Rob Deemer, Associate Professor of English Bruce Simon and Director of Technology John McCune.

The 256-page text is intended to spur meaningful conversations by offering valuable new perspectives. Its contributors offer practical insights for those involved in academic governance and illuminate the subtle aspects of governance that make the difference between success and failure. Each chapter presents a different view of governing within institutions of higher education.

The Fredonia trio’s chapter, “Improving Shared Governance through Bylaws, Revision and Ratification,” was based on a presentation given at the first SUNY Voices Conference in 2014.

Drs. Deemer and Simon and Mr. McCune describe the ways they have leveraged modern technology and their own bylaws revisions to foster a greater degree of collaboration across all campus governance constituencies, including faculty, students and administrators. They highlight the processes that led to Fredonia being awarded the first SUNY Shared Voices Governance Award, in recognition of the collaborative structure that evolved on campus.

More information about the publication, edited by SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Emerita Sharon F. Cramer from SUNY Buffalo State College and Parliamentarian for the SUNY University Faculty Senate, is available online.
