Devils roll to win in SUNYAC opener

Fredonia opened the SUNYAC portion of its 2017 women's lacrosse season with a 13-1 home win Saturday afternoon over the Potsdam Bears.

Katie Miller (Hamburg) had five goals and collected four draw controls to lead the Blue Devil attack. Nicole Burrows (Baldwinsville) made five saves while coming within one shot of posting Fredonia's first-ever shutout in the sport.

Potsdam's Michaela Cole scored 2:32 into the game to ruin the shutout bid, The goal gave the Bears (2-5 overall, 0-1 SUNYAC) a 1-0 lead.

Miller's first goal of the game evened the score at the 6:48 mark. Audrey Yokopovich (Webster) scored at 9:07 to put the Blue Devils (2-7 overall, 1-0 SUNYAC) in the lead for good. It was her first of three goals. Samantha Spiess (Fairport) and Tara Keohane (Yorktown Heights) had two goals each while Madeline Haney (Macedon) scored once.

Spiess and Yokopovich each collected three ground balls. Yokopovich was also credited with three caused turnovers.

The Blue Devils are back in action Tuesday vs. Buffalo State at University Stadium. The SUNYAC game is also the part of the Battle By The Lake series with the Bengals, with Fredonia leading 15 1/2 to 8 1/2.
