Long ball powers sweep

Matt Wilhelm circles the bases after his third-inning home run.

Fredonia used some instant offense with four home runs to drop Oneonta, 7-6 and 5-4, in a doubleheader sweep on Sunday.

Down 5-2 in the eighth inning of Game 1, Alexio Medina lofted a towering homer to tie the game at 5-all. Liam Kelly would deliver a two-run shot -- an inside-the-park round-tripper -- in the tenth inning to secure the win.

Fredonia's first run also came via the long ball. Matt Wilhelm hit a solo shot in the third to initiate the scoring.

Starting pitcher Jake Harford threw seven innings striking out eight, leaving with a no decision. He allowed five runs, four of them earned. Zach Lyman tossed the final three to earn his second win of the season. He struck out four, walked none, and allowed only one baserunner -- a solo homer in the bottom of the tenth.

Mike Prentice had three hits for Fredonia and Kevin Yirinec added a pair of singles.

The Devils took the initial lead in the third when freshman Christian Rizzolo cracked his first home run of the season. The Devils added another pair on a two-run single by Medina. The final run of the inning crossed the plate on an errant throw on a double-play attempt.

Kevin made it 5-0 with an RBI single in the top of the fourth.

Oneonta got on the board when Dalton Beatty singled home the Dragons first run. Oneonta would then get runners at second and third with nobody out.

Fredonia starter Luke Kuczewski the punched out the next three batters to regain the momentum.

Oneonta added a run in the sixth following a double steal and sacrifice fly to make it a 5-2 game.

Oneonta made it a run-one game in the bottom half of the seventh with a one-out, two-run homer off the bat of Mickey Mullins. Brandon LaVenture then smoked a ball down the right-field line. Medina made a game-saving, diving catch on the warning track before collecting the final out on a routine fly ball.

Kuczewski earned the win going six plus innings, striking out eight and walking one. He gave up three earned runs. Ryan Landers earned the save, tossing the final inning.

Steve Zaprowski went 4-for-4 at the plate. Yirinec was 1-for-1 with three walks.

Fredonia improved to 10-10 overall. Oneonta fell to 8-7. The teams wrap up the three-game set Monday at noon at Wells College due to wet grounds in Oneonta.
