Gerber pens essay in ‘Approaches to Teaching the History of the English Language’

Dr. Natalie Gerber

Associate Professor of English Natalie Gerber wrote an essay, "Engaging Multimedia in the HEL (History of the English Language) Classroom," in the newly edited collection “Approaches to Teaching the History of the English Language.”

The volume, to be released by Oxford University Press in October, reads as a series of master classes taught by experienced instructors who explain the pedagogical problems that inspired resourceful teaching practices. Although its chapters are authored by seasoned teachers, many of whom are preeminent scholars in their individual fields, the book is designed for instructors at any career stage.

In her essay, Dr. Gerber drew upon her experiences teaching ENGL 352 History of the English Language and includes an excerpt from Lisa Carlson, ’13, which drew on her own experiences overseas in the military. Ms. Carlson, who majored in English and is a former student of Gerber, is the school library media specialist in the Sherman (N.Y.) Central School District.
