Another shutout, this time to tie Plattsburgh

For the third straight game, Fredonia men's soccer has shut out a conference opponent.

Its latest whitewash came Saturday afternoon at Plattsburgh, yet this time it resulted in a tie. Unable to muster scoring, the Blue Devils (8-5-2 overall, 2-3-2 SUNYAC) and Cardinals played to a 0-0 deadlock after double overtime.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ty Bentham (Columbus, Ind.) made eight saves to post his fourth shutout of the season. He lowered his goals-against average to 1.45. Plattsburgh's Patrick Feeley had three saves.

"We have not conceded a goal in three (straight) SUNYAC contests," Fredonia Head Coach P.J. Gondek said. "The defense and Ty are coming together at the right time."

The overtime was the eighth this season for the Blue Devils. They are 5-1-2 in those games.

"This team continues to battle," Gondek said, "no matter who the opponent is. When a player goes down we go to the next player and he does the job."

Coupled with a 1-0 overtime win Friday at Potsdam, the Blue Devils mustered four of a possible six points in its weekend jaunt to the North Country. They will enter next weekend in seventh place, two points out of the sixth and final playoff spot. Both of next weekend's games are at home -- 3 p.m. Friday vs. New Paltz and 2 p.m. Saturday vs. Oneonta.

"We wanted," Gondek said, "to give ourselves a chance heading into the last weekend and we did that."
