Root earns applause for compiling new edition of Schoenberg’s ‘Models for Beginners in Composition’

School of Music Associate Professor Gordon Root

School of Music Associate Professor Gordon Root struck a high note with a very positive review in a Rhinegold Publishing online magazine for his editing of a new edition of Arnold Schoenberg’s “Models for Beginners in Composition.”

In his review, Al Summers, an authority on Mr. Schoenberg, heralded the Oxford University Press book as the first scholarly edition of the practice manual that many consider to be Schoenberg’s most important general work. Dr. Root put the work into context, the reviewer noted, and took additional steps by giving fascinating background and tracing the origins of “Models for Beginners in Composition” right through to Gerald Strang’s UCLA course notes. Root effectively deals with all the guises in which the seminal book, originally published in 1943 and designed for a wide audience. Root’s insightful commentary was recognized as a highlight.

The review can be accessed online.
