Fredonia students take action to help Puerto Rico after hurricane

Damage in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria.

Fredonia students, faculty, and staff have been affected by the devastation in Puerto Rico caused by Hurricane Maria. They are hoping to raise aid and awareness for the people of the U.S. territory.

Fredonia student Tito Mercado Irizarry worked with the Department of Marketing and Communications to produce a video to bring the message home. "I came up with the idea of a video (seen below) after discussing several options for raising awareness with Khristian King (of the Intercultural Center)," Irizarry said. "We decided that the best way to educate the population was to create a video, using the resources available in Fredonia, so that it could be shared throughout social media platforms. My goal for this video was to gather the knowledge of our faculty in a way that could be applied to the situation in Puerto Rico in regards to Hurricane Maria, and I feel like we accomplished just that. The faculty was incredibly eager to help, and more than willing to work with everyone's schedule, especially considering the short time we had available to put this together."

"The video has definitely made an impact on social media, as students, faculty, and administrators have shared it for everyone to see," Irizarry said. "It has served as a platform for conversation about Puerto Rico, and the effects of a hurricane of this magnitude. People have also shown support by donating to the current fund that we have created with Fredonia Foundations."

"The experience of creating all of these projects has been incredibly rewarding, as it has shown us the dedication that Fredonia, and its community, has for its students, and their passions," Irizarry said.
