Homecoming 2008 marks the 50th anniversary of Men's Soccer at FSU, the 25th anniversary of our Sound Recording Technology program, and honors for former athletes who will be inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame, and two alumni who will be recognized for outstanding achievement in their respective fields.

The 2008-09 Lake Shore Savings Season will feature events in the Kaleidoscope Family Series sponsored by Howard Hanna Holt Real Estate, the World Travel Series sponsored by Fredonia Place, and the Pops Series, sponsored by DFT Communications.  Season or single-event tickets are available at the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office at 673-3501 (1-866-441-4928).

For as long as she can remember, music major Katherine Petersen has been intrigued by Africa. “The pictures that we see in the States are always beautiful and the music is captivating and always makes me want to dance.”  It was a Lundquist International Fellowship that created the pathway for the adventure-seeking senior from Gowanda to have an extended stay in that faraway place.

A reception Friday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. opens the next exhibit of mixed media works by artist Amy Hauber in the  Art Gallery at Rockefeller Arts Center. The work by Ms. Hauber is a mixture of media including digital papercraft prints, sculpture, ceramics and digital video and installation

Six years after graduating from SUNY Fredonia’s musical theatre program, Gabriel Croom is acting and singing in two roles for Disney Theatrical’s The Lion King, now on Broadway. His physically demanding roles require him to walk on his arms and legs atop stilts, and perform while being winched up to a harness.

The Biology Club helped preserve a unique sphagnum bog in Western New York recently by digging up and removing white pines that were re-seeding from a nearby woods and threatening the survival of the rare wetland near Springville, N.Y.

Pianist Tony Caramia will present “Richard Rodgers—The Sound of His Music,” a multi-media solo jazz piano tribute featuring 21 songs from 17 shows, on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall.

Robert Caruso, retired from nearly three decades in higher education at the University of California at Los Angeles, recently took the long flight back to his Dunkirk roots and alma mater, SUNY Fredonia, the to meet Amanda Straight of Fredonia, the first recipient of a Caruso Memorial Scholarship.

Biology students who were awarded summer research fellowships will present the findings of their research at an open session on Friday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. in Jewett Hall Room 101. The students undertook a wide range of studies involving local fish, water quality, little brown bats, and native plants.

An historical reconstruction of the landmark 1950 Clef recording “Charlie Parker with Strings” will be performed by Fredonia School of Music talent and guest saxophonist Darcy Hepner on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall.

The Women Take Aim film series will show four films this fall on Wednesday evenings starting Oct. 22: "The Education of Shelby Knox," (documentary aired on P.O.V. of PBS), "You Don't Know Dick," (documentary), and two foreign films, "Kept and Dreamless," and "Luxury Car."

Alumna Jessica Barnack, a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will present the keynote address at The Women’s Studies annual Fall Gathering on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 5 p.m. in the Horizon Room of the Williams Center.

Sophomore and childhood education major Christine Padasak of Springville, N.Y., is one of 40 students nationwide with Cystic fibrosis who have received a $2,500 scholarship from Solvay Pharmaceuticals, Inc., based on her essay about achieving her goals despite living with the disease. She is now eligible for a $10,000 scholarship from the company which will be awarded through an on-line voting process.
