Findley Lake, NY

These four reports form a related group that reflects the impact of the Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act; those acts encouraged communities to conduct research, write a state of the lake (SOL) report, and conduct drinking water investigations. Following the SOL report, communities would write a lake management report which included certain management activities the communities could choose to implement. The third report in this sequence is the Engineering Report which is a study to implement a major finding of the SOL and management reports. The Findley Lake engineering report describes how to implement better sewage treatment which should lead to the consequent reduction of nutrients. The study was conducted by Hill Engineering, Inc. (retained by the Chautauqua County Water Quality Task Force) for portions of the Hamlet of Findley Lake in the Town of Mina, Chautauqua County, NY. The last report of the sequence, "Sources of Unwanted Nutrients at Findley Lake" extends the earlier reports by showing connections betweeen several distinctive land uses, well water quality, and aquifer discharge to the lake. It reviewed evidence for sources of nutrients in groundwater near Findley Lake, NY so that the BMPs (best management practices) will have the greatest practical benefits in reducing nutrients in the lake and drinking water from wells. The Town of Mina, Findley Lake Watershed Foundation and the Chautauqua County Water Quality Task Force funded the project in hopes to improve the quality of Findley Lake and the gravel aquifer in which it rests, both in the near future and the long run.
