HOUSEHOLDSA large majority of Chautauqua County residents (79.5%) live in family households, 15.9% live in non-family households, and 4.6% live in group quarters. A family householder is a householder living with one or more individuals related to him or her by birth, marriage, or adoption. The householder and all of the people in the household related to him or her are family members. A nonfamily householder is a householder living alone or with nonrelatives only. Those in group quarters are comprised of institutionalized persons, such as those in correctional facilities or nursing homes, and noninstitutionalized persons, such as college students. The total number of households in Chautauqua County is 54,488. Of particular interest with respect to health services are households with children under 18, particularly single parent families, and households of person over 65, especially those living alone. A) Households with ChildrenThe following table presents a breakdown of family households based on type and presence of children under 18. There are 36,147 family households in the county (66.34% of all households). Of the 54,488 households in the county, 52% are married couple families, and 14.33% are other families, consisting of male or female householders with no spouse present. Children under 18 are present in married couple families in 21.79% of all households, in male households with no spouse present in 2.27% of all households, and in female households with no spouse present in 6.78%.

B) Householders 65 and OverThere are 22,367 persons 65 and older in Chautauqua County. Of this population, 58.55% reside in family households, 33.54% in nonfamily households, and 7.92% in group quarters. Of all persons in this age group, 7.1% are male householders living alone; over three times as many, 23.9% are female householders living alone; and 1.2% reside with nonrelatives. A very large majority of those living in group quarters are institutionalized.
The equivalent household data for Chautauqua County locations are presented below. The following table shows the number of nonfamily households by sex, living alone, and age of householder. Note that 20% of male householders 65 and over live alone, while 52% of females 65 and over live alone.
Household structure is associated with other socioeconomic factors such as age, sex, living alone, and poverty as an indicator of health risks and service needs. Households of females living alone, particularly those with children and those 65 and over, are at greatest risk.
