Finland is for the most part a quiet land, where a ramshackle cottage by a lake and a properly stoked sauna is all that's required for happiness. It's a vast expanse of forests and lakes and more forests, punctuated by towns full of people who are genuinely surprised to see tourists. "Finland-a Cultural Crossroad" will introduce students to the musical culture and folk dance traditions of the Finish people. Student will also meet native artisans and, through observation and active participation, learn how to the weave, smoke salmon, and felt. Housing at the Lempaala Health Spa provides opportunity for reflection and further exploration and study of Finland's unique and mystic history.
Dr. Kay Stonefelt, Professor of Music Percussion, joined the Fredonia School of Music in 1993. She holds a Doctor of Music in Percussion Performance from Indiana University and is well known in Tampere, Finland for her dulcimer performance in La Vita Femina-the life of a woman. Kay is looking forward to sharing her experiences in Finland.
The program is open to Sophomore, Junior, and Senior students in good academic standing.
Applications will be accepted until March 10, 2006. Students interested in learning more about this program or seeking an application may contact Dr. Stonefelt or a study abroad advisor in the International Education Office.
