Fredonia weather station

The Fredonia and Jamestown climate stations have long records, dating from 1926. Both records are nearly complete, however the Fredonia record is especially continuous and the station location little changed. The Jamestown data were collected mostly in wide valley bottoms of the Appalachian Plateau in or near Jamestown at the 1250 ft elevation. The Fredonia site (see photos above) is at the edge of the Village at 760 ft elevation on the Lake Erie Plain.

Precipitation data is presented in 3 different ways for each of the two NOAA stations: as a Monthly Precipitation graph, a Departure graph and an Accumulated Departure graph. We used both bar graphs and line graphs to show this information. Bar graphs are good at displaying the true nature of discrete data whereas line graphs are particularly useful for depicting trends.

The Monthly Precipitation graphs show the total precipitation for each month versus the "normal" monthly precipitation in a line graph form and the total precipitation for each month in bar graph form. Normal is defined as a month's average value over the preceding three decades. For example, normal for the 2001-2010 decade is the month's average value over 1971-2000. NOAA redefines the normal for each decade.

The Departure graphs for each station show the amount that each month's precipitation is above or below that month's normal value (in other words, the departure from the normal) in both bar graph and line graph forms.

The Accumulated Departure graphs for each station present the additive effects of the positive or negative departures. Therefore, the graph displays the departure trend through time by adding the current month's departure from the 30-year normal for that month to the previous month's departure.

Temperature data is presented for each of the two NOAA stations as a single line graph of monthly averages over the years 2000-present . The "normal" temperature line for those years is displayed for comparison.
