Purpose:

The Professional Development Center Board is pleased to announce the Instructional Incentive Awards Program, which provides support for purchasing equipment or technology that will be used in the classroom to enhance students’ intellectual experiences in one of the following areas, as outlined in the Baccalaureate Goals learning outcomes framework:

  • Skilled (develop Intellectual and Applied Skills, Literacies and Knowledges),
  • Connected (engage Community and Diversity: Local Stewardship, Global Citizenship),
  • Creative (demonstrate Scholarship, Artistry, and Innovation), and
  • Responsible (activate Sustainability, Ethics, Leadership, and Professionalism).

This award will not fund consumable or disposable materials and equipment, such as paper products, headphones, food, writing implements, etc…

According to SUNY policy, materials purchased remain the property of SUNY Fredonia, but are for the use of the awardee.

Funded by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, this grant aims to fund as many qualifying projects as possible. The Professional Development Center Board is responsible for the review of applications and for making recommendations on awardees to the Provost for Academic Affairs.

Eligibility:

These awards are meant to provide faculty, librarians, and professionals from the Academic Affairs division who have teaching responsibilities, or who support teaching faculty, with opportunities to explore uses of new technologies and equipment to enhance student learning. Examples of types of equipment that have been successfully funded in the past, include:

  • Digital recording devices
  • Musical instruments
  • Non-consumable lab equipment
  • Instructional models
  • Software

Preference will be given to:

  • Faculty at the assistant professor or assistant librarian rank, adjunct faculty, and professionals seeking permanent appointment
  • Faculty and professionals who have not previously received the award
  • Proposals that clearly articulate how classroom use of the equipment will develop students’ abilities in relation to at least one of the following Baccalaureate Goals learning outcomes:
    • Skilled (develop Intellectual and Applied Skills, Literacies and Knowledges),
    • Connected (engage Community and Diversity: Local Stewardship, Global Citizenship),
    • Creative (demonstrate Scholarship, Artistry, and Innovation), and
    • Responsible (activate Sustainability, Ethics, Leadership, and Professionalism).
  • Proposals that clearly articulate how the impact on student learning will be assessed
  • Proposals that demonstrate the equipment’s usefulness in multiple courses
  • Proposals that demonstrate a departmental, cross disciplinary, or team approach to sharing equipment purchased
  • Those who can demonstrate an ability to match funds, if necessary

Amount:

Up to $2000.00 for future purchases. Purchases must be made between December 1, 2013 and June 1, 2014.

Partial Funding:
Depending on the number of applicants, awards may be funded in part, or in full.

Application Procedures:

  • Please review the form before writing your proposal.
  • Describe the purpose(s) of the project including the project goals and objectives.
  • Explicitly address the ways the project would impact teaching and learning in your course(s).

  • Describe how the impact on student learning will be assessed
  • Include a detailed plan for how you plan to share equipment with other members of the campus community, or describe how the equipment will be used in multiple courses.
  • If the cost of equipment exceeds the maximum award amount, please provide a description of other funding sources that you will be seeking.
  • Include specific, prioritized budget information and a partial funding contingency plan. That is, if the project does not receive full funding, what parts of the project could be revised to make the most of the funding awarded?

Reporting Procedures:

The Professional Development Center will ask awardees to share the impact of his/her project on their classroom practice by:

  • Participating in an informal open-house demonstration of how his/her classroom innovation impacted student learning.
