Hearts for Sri Lanka: New Schools for Tsunami Victims

Room to Read Help us send a Valentine to the children of Sri Lanka

Dear Campus Community:

I am writing to request your participation in the "Hearts for Sri Lanka: New Schools for Tsunami Victims" campaign, an important effort initiated to help distressed children in Sri Lanka, one of the areas hard-hit by the December 26 tsunami. Starting this week, and ending Friday, February 11, SUNY Fredonia will be seeking donations in hopes of raising at least $5,000, the amount required to build a new school. I hope your generosity will help us exceed that goal.

With your gifts, we will send a check on Valentine's Day to "Room to Read," a trusted and award-winning non-profit organization based in California which has been dedicated to building and supplying schools and libraries in Asia since 1999. It is experienced in working in this part of the world, and has a focused mission that is close to all of us--teaching and learning. After the tsunami, "Room to Read" initiated a special emergency campaign to raise $1 million to rebuild the educational infrastructure of Sri Lanka. This will be a long-term restoration effort that will extend beyond the primary relief efforts occurring now.

Many of you may have already donated to a special charity to help the tsunami victims, but I hope you will support this rebuilding effort. SUNY Fredonia's gift will be noted on a plaque in one of the new schools. Sometime during the next two weeks, you will be asked to give to this effort. Please open your hearts and make a tax-free donation. Or if you are ready to give now, please send your check directly through campus mail to the Fredonia College Foundation, or through regular mail to 272 Central Ave., Fredonia, NY, 14063. Checks should be made payable to Fredonia College Foundation, and designated for the "Tsunami Fund."

This campaign is spearheaded by Joyce Smith of the Office of Volunteer and Community Services and Student Association President-Elect Patrick Fanelli. The Tsunami Relief Committee met during the January break to plan the "Hearts for Sri Lanka: New Schools for Tsunami Victims" campaign. Committee members include Leonard Faulk, Harry Watters, Christine Davis Mantai, Betty Gossett, Vincent Gugino, and Daniel Goodwin.

Thank you in advance for your support of this humanitarian effort.

Sincerely,

Dennis L. Hefner, Ph.D.
President
