Simulation of European Union summit bringing 150 to campus
Photo of 2005 Eurosim participantA European Union simulation program will take place again at SUNY Fredonia April 12 through 15 when the SUNY Model European Union will simulate the European Council Summit. More than 150 guests from the Eastern U.S. and Europe are expected for the event.   Prof. Raymond Rushboldt of the political science department is the director of the SUNY Model European Union, based at the Fredonia campus. Students are expected from as far away as Poland. The campuses participating are from the U.K., Europe, and the Eastern U.S. SUNY campuses involved, in addition to Fredonia, are the University at Buffalo, Buffalo State College, SUNY Cortland, SUNY New Paltz, and SUNY Old Westbury.  SUNY Fredonia hosted the Eurosim program on campus in 2005. Fredonia talent and BPO perform in concert

The Fredonia School of Music and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra will partner for a concert on Sunday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall. The special engagement will feature the orchestra under the direction of its celebrated conductor, JoAnn Falletta (in photo above). She and the orchestra will be joined by guest violin soloist and Fredonia School of Music Violin Professor Janet Sung, performing the famous Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35.  The program will also feature the Overture to Mignon by Ambroise Thomas and Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7.  Tickets are $20 ($12 for students) and are available at theCentral Ticket Office (716-673-3501; 866-441-4928).  All concert-goers are welcome to join Maestro Falletta in celebrating the BPO’s return to Fredonia at a post-concert reception.

Career of Donald Bohlen celebrated at April 14 concert

“Tally-Ho,” a concert celebrating the music and career of Dr. Donald Bohlen of the Fredonia School of Music, will be performed Saturday, April 14, in Rosch Recital Hall at 3 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.  Ethos New Music Society, a student group at SUNY Fredonia, is sponsoring the concert in honor of Dr. Bohlen, who founded the group in 1977 and has been its advisor for 30 years.  The concert will feature music by Dr. Bohlen as well as by some of his past and present students, including James Piorkowski and Lisa Brigantino.

People of Color Concerns Conference planned for April 21

“The World, the Society, and My Reflection … the Person in the Mirror” is the theme the 2007 People of Color Concerns Conference, sponsored by the SUNY Fredonia Black Student Union, Latinos Unidos, and the Alumni Office. The Black Student Union Fashion Show, a 31-year tradition at Fredonia, is a feature of the conference. It takes place Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Williams Center.

Boyce Watkins, an author; John Elmore, a Buffalo attorney; and Pastor Roderick L. Hennings, of Zion Dominion World Ministries, Buffalo, are key presenters. Various community leaders, SUNY Fredonia officials and Fredonia BSU alumni will also participate in the two-day conference.

Vandana Shiva to speak on environment and activism
Dr. Vandana Shiva, a physicist, activist and writer, will deliver a lecture Tuesday, April 10, at 5 p.m. at W101 Thompson Hall. Informal meetings with students and faculty are also planned during her day-long visit to the SUNY Fredonia campus.  Following her lecture at Thompson Hall, Dr. Shiva will host a question-and-answer session, 5:45 to 6 p.m. A book-signing/reception follows from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. in Café G at the Williams Center. Her itinerary also includes attending the WOST 301 Feminist Theory class taught by Dr. Adrienne McCormick that morning and meeting with women’s studies students and faculty in the afternoon. Children’s Concerts conclude with Brass Ensemble
The Musical Journeys Program of the Fredonia School of Music has launched a new series of free concerts designed to appeal to very young children. Selected student ensembles from the Fredonia School of Music will perform four, half-hour Children’s Concerts on Saturday mornings at 10:30 a.m. concluding on April 28 in the multi-purpose room of the Chautauqua County Home, 10836 Temple Road in Dunkirk.

Fredonia SIFE team wins Regional title again
SIFE Team members give the thumbs upIt wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say SUNY Fredonia “owns” the SIFE USA Regional Competition. Fredonia’s SIFE team has won the event the last nine times, and this year’s competition, held March 28 in Cleveland, wasn’t any different.  “This victory was especially gratifying,” said team advisor Joseph Izzo, marketing professor in the business administration department. “The team dedicated this competition to Dr. Franklin Krohn, who was the adviser since the team began 13 years ago.”  The National competition, to be held in Dallas, Texas, in May, is the team’s next destination. The Chautauqua League of Women Voters is sponsoring a panel discussion on the media's use of the Internet for presenting news and engaging new audiences. "Blogs, Wikis, and Newsfeeds: The Internet and Other Media," will be held Monday, April 16, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the SUNY Fredonia Williams Center, Room S104. Mary Louise White Visiting Writers' Series presents a poetry reading by Gabriel Welsch: 7 p.m., G26 McEwen Hall. Gabriel Welsch is a former garden designer whose poems, stories, essays and reviews have appeared in dozens of magazines and journals. He is a recipient of the Pennsylvania Arts Council Individual Artist's Fellowship for Fiction, and was the inaugural Thoreau Poet in Residence at the Toledo Botanical Garden. Questions and answers and a book signing will follow. Most of the poets' books are available at the campus bookstore.

Visiting Artists Program presents Richard Felton, Graphic Designer: 8:30 p.m., 209 McEwen Hall.  The topic of his presentation is “Future Tense: Connecting the past, crashing into the future.”  From 1979 – 84 Richard Felton was a senior designer for the New York design firm, Anspach Grossman Portugal; after which he established his own New York based design consulting firm. He has received awards for identity programs for Sun Company, Texaco, the New York Stock Exchange, Price Waterhouse and Tiffany & Co. His work has been featured in numerous design publications as well as in Time magazine. Richard Felton began his association with The University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 1974. In 1999 he became a full-time faculty member, addressing professional and pragmatic concerns in the senior level Problem Solving course, junior level Communications Studio, and sophomore level Design Systems. He is currently Chairman of the Graphic Design Department. Free and open to the public.

JSU at Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Service): 10:30 a.m. Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo. The Jewish Student Union will be traveling to the Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo to attend the annual Yom Hashoah Service. This is the day that Jews and others throughout the world remember the six-million Jews and five-million others who perished in the Holocaust. Matzo Ball – Jewish History Month Closing Ceremonies: 5 p.m., Williams Center Multipurpose Room.  The traditional "Matzo Ball" was moved from the opening ceremonies to the closing ceremonies for Jewish History Month, due to the Passover Holiday. Entertainment by the “12 Corners Klezmer Band" from Rochester, N.Y. Klezmer is a type of Eastern European Jewish folk music. Also featuring traditional Middle Eastern food: falafel accompanied by salad, chips (french fries), dessert and beverages.
