For emergency alerts and cancellation info, sign up for SUNY Fredonia's text messaging service

After evaluating methods of effectively alerting students, faculty, staff, and parents and guardians about campus emergencies and/or weather-related closings, SUNY Fredonia has chosen to use the Textcaster service to implement a text-messaging system to the cell phones of its community members. Only people who register for the service will receive the text message. David Herman, vice president for student affairs, said, "Our goal is to have all students, faculty, staff, and parents and guardians enrolled in this program."   Click here to register for the text-messaging service.

Campus Woodlot invaded by non-native honeysuckle!
Volunteers needed to pull it out this Saturday, Titus says

Biology Professor Jon Titus announced that the Biology Club is sponsoring a four-hour work detail in the Campus Woodlot this  Saturday (Oct. 6) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to remove an invasive species. "The Campus Woodlot has been invaded by non-native bush honeysuckles, which are native to Asia," he said. Click here to read more about this alien plant. "Bush honeysuckles form dense patches in forest understories that shade out young trees, spring ephemerals, and other native plants and degrade the value of wildlife habitat.  Some bush honeysuckle species also release chemicals into the soil to inhibit other plant growth.  Bush honeysuckle fruits are very low in nutrients and do not provide the resources needed by migrating birds."  All students, faculty and staff as well as community members are encouraged to meet at the clocktower at 9 a.m. or just meet up with the group in the woodlot within the four-hour period. "We will provide needed tools and have some extra work gloves...but if you have clippers or gloves please bring them.  Be prepared to have fun and get a little dirty," Dr. Titus said.

SEFA Campaign getting off the ground;
participation urged by President, "Because We Live Here"

University President Dennis L. Hefner announced he and Mrs. Jan Hefner will be showing their support for the State Employees Federated Appeal campaign at SUNY Fredonia by offering a holiday lunch in December at their home. A total of 15 winners will be selected in a drawing from those pledging at least $25. "Please consider making a contribution to this year’s SEFA campaign," President Hefner said. "I know you are asked to support many worthy projects, but the comprehensive services provided to our community by the many SEFA agencies makes this campaign special. Our campus is very close to being second among the SUNY University Colleges in SEFA participation rates. Let’s aim for Number One as we attempt to reach a 100 percent participation rate!"   SEFA donations benefit a wide variety of local agencies that provide services to the community, and to the college (an example of the latter is the Campus and Community Children's Center).  The campus appeal is chaired by Ray Rushboldt (political science) and Martha Smith (Director of Revenue Accounting). The theme for this year's campaign is "Because we live here."

Stroke Support Group meets twice a month
at Youngerman Center in Thompson Hall

The Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders has resumed its support group meetings for stroke and head injury survivors and family members. The group meets the first and third Tuesday of the month at 3 p.m. in Room W127 Thompson Hall.  A typical group meeting includes activities to help stroke survivors use compensatory strategies to improve communication skills, provides educational information and an opportunity to socialize and share experiences. Light refreshments are provided. "The Youngerman Center recognizes that there are individuals in the community whose insurance benefit for therapy has been exhausted but their hopes for improvement have not," said Julie Williams, coordinator of the program. Call 673-4618 for more information about attending the group.
