Undergraduates Rebecca Grady (sociology), Becky Wolfe (sociology), and Jaime Barnes
(psychology) presented papers at the New York State Sociological
Association annual meetings in New York City on Sat. Oct. 6. Dr. Linda Dorsten (sociology) was their faculty sponsor.
Undergraduate Jennifer O'Boyle
co-authored with Chandra E. Woolson of Fredonia the book, 'A Divine
Journey from Madness to Nonsense' The authors gave a poetry reading
and book at the Book Nook recently.
Incoming freshman Christalyn Domino
(visual arts and new media) won the Heinz Ketchup Creativity Contest
based on work she did as a senior in high school at Immaculata Academy
in Hamburg, N.Y. She was one of 12 talented student artist
winners. As a result, Heinz is printing more than 16 million Heinz
Ketchup Packets featuring her artwork in early 2008. Her design
can be viewed at on the Heinz contest website.
Julie Newell (music) narrated 'Hansel and Gretel and More' for the Opera Buffs of Western New York 20th anniversary 'Inside Opera' lecture series in October at the Harlem Road Community Center in Amherst, N.Y.
Ellen Litwicki (history) was
interviewed about the Fourth of July holiday this summer for Katie
Couric's "Notebook," a one-minute daily segment that appears on the CBS
News website, radio, and television affiliates, and by Bill Radke, host
of National Public Radio's "Weekend America." The Weekend America program is still available for download on the NPR website. The CBS segments ran on the July 4, 2007.
Lynda L. Pleszewski (administration) has been appointed Budget Director at SUNY Fredonia. Previously, she was Budget Analyst.
Liz Lee (visual arts and new media) was the grand prize winner of the Booksmart Studio 2007 Residency Book Arts Award
and will be working in Rochester this fall to create a limited edition
fine art publication of her work. Some of her recent work has
been included in the new book, Light and Lens: Photography in the Digital Age,
edited by Robert Hirsch and published by Elsevier Focal Press
(release date: November). In the text, her work is featured
twice, first in the introduction chapter establishing the purpose of
the book and the relationship between photography and digital
work, then again as an example of the use of text and imagery.
The second section includes a description of one of the projects
in her 'Introduction to Photography' classes, as well as an example of
a project created by one of her students. Currently, she is
exhibiting a large body of work, entitled "Faux Finish," at the Weeks
Gallery at Jamestown Community College. She will be presenting her new Grassroots the 'shun' series at the Society for Photographic Education's 45th annual conference in Denver in March 2008.
Ziya Arnavut computer sciences) was named Associate Editor of the Computers and Electrical Engineering Journal published by Elsevier company. He received the appointment in July. The March 2007 issue of Parallel Computing
published a paper he authored with three others: "Fault diagnosis for
airplaine engines using Bayesian networks and distributed particle
swarmoptimization."
Ellie Reddy (Language, Learning & Leadership) has been named Volunteer of the Year by InterVol
of Rochester, N.Y., which subsequently decided to include a
feature article in their end-of-year review about her involvement
in the SUNY Fredonia Belize Project and the work of SUNY Fredonia
Friends Across Borders chapter.
Bill Brown (biology) co-authored a paper with two (former) Fredonia students, Andrew Chimenti and Joseph Siebert. Their
article, "Payoffs of fighting in house crickets: motivational asymmetry
increases male aggression and mating success," appeared in Ethology, the International Journal of Behavioral Biology, (May 2007). Mr. Chimenti received both his B.S. in Biology Adolescence Education and M.S. in Biology from Fredonia
and now teaches high school biology in North Carolina. Joseph
Siebert graduated in May 2006 with a B.S. in Environmental Science.
A documentary by Nefin Dinc
(communication) will be aired online at the Imagining Ourselves website
Tuesday, Oct. 22. Her film, 'I Named Her Angel,' will be featured, and
visitors will be able to make real-time comments and ask questions of
