Computer Science Professor Ziya Arnavut
reported that SUNY Fredonia students achieved a regional ranking of
fifth when they went up against top schools in the East at the first
round of the Northeast North America ACM International
Collegiate Programming Contest. The students traveled to Western
New England College to compete. Rankings of the first 6
teams out of 19 were, in order of first to sixth: MIT Beavers, MIT Engineers, McGill University, Harvard University, SUNY Fredonia, University of Massachusetts. Harvard, Fredonia, UMass, and some other teams all solved 2 problems each. Overall, SUNY Fredonia ranked 4th among the 11 institutions. Click here to review the results.
Peter Reinelt (economics) published
the paper "Carbon Capture Retrofits and the Cost of Regulatory
Uncertainty," with co-author David Keith in the October 2007 issue of The Energy Journal
(published by the International Association for Energy
Economics). The paper examines investment and carbon dioxide
emissions in the power generation industry under uncertainty in natural
gas prices and the timing and stringency of future global warming
regulations
A recent performance by Janet Sung (School of Music) was broadcast on NPR's
"Performance Today" Oct. 24. Violinist Sung was joined by
clarinetist Richard Hawkins and pianist Michael Gurt in performing Paul
Schoenfeld's Trio for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano ("Klezmer"). Visit the NPR Performance Today website. Performance
Today is also carried on Sirius Satellite Radio's Symphony Hall Channel
(channel 80), Monday through Friday from 1 to 2 p.m.
Bruce Johnstone (School of Music) just returned from playing a jazz festival in L.A. for The Los Angeles Jazz Institute. A
four day event, the theme was a salute to big band jazz and
featured 19 bands in concert plus panel discussions by the
performers. Professor Johnstone was the featured baritone
saxophone soloist with three bands: The L.A. College All Star
Neophonic Orchestra; The Maynard Ferguson Alumni Band; a walk-on guest
with The Cal State Long Beach Jazz Ensemble; and panelist with
four other former Maynard Ferguson players discussing jazz styles and
influences from the 1970s to today. A feature article about
Professor Johnstone will be published in the November issue of The Phi Kappa Forum,
focusing on his life and musical influences. The article will
run in the publication dated Nov. 21, 2007.
