Farewell to retiring veterans

Campus Report bids "adieu" to all of Fredonia's retiring faculty, who will be missed in uncountable, special ways. Those who left their Fredonia posts in the past 12 months are listed here in order of their length of service:

  • Dr. Lee Braude, Professor of Sociology and former Kasling Lecturer at SUNY Fredonia. Dr. Braude had been with SUNY Fredonia since 1968. Dr. Braude wrote A Sense of Sociology and Work and Workers: A Sociological Analysis. He and his wife, Norma, former correspondent for the Buffalo News, have moved to their hometown, Chicago.

  • Dr. Daniel Reiff, Professor of Art History and former Kasling Lecturer at SUNY Fredonia. A Distinguished Service Professor, Dr. Reiff began a 34-year stint at SUNY Fredonia in 1970. His two books on Fredonia architecture were important in illuminating the historical value of the village and the region, and his latest prize-winning study, Houses from Books, featured nearly 200 houses in Chautauqua County. He and his wife are moving to Buffalo, N.Y.

  • Dr. James Shokoff, Professor of English. Dr. Shokoff joined the Department of English at SUNY Fredonia in 1970. In addition to writing numerous scholarly articles, Dr. Shokoff began to adapt book-length works for the emerging new literary medium, the audiobook, in the 1980s. He has written the audiobooks for Mickey Spillane's I, the Jury, and Shelley Winters' second autobiography, The Middle of My Century.

  • Dr. William Graebner, Professor of History and former Kasling Lecturer. Dr. Graebner had been with SUNY Fredonia since 1971. Dr. Graebner is the author of eight books and more than 40 scholarly articles, including three in American history's flagship journal, the Journal of American History. His books have sold over 140,000 copies and he has held two fellowships from the ACLS. He is a former Fulbright Professor. Also see this.

  • Dr. Kenneth Mantai, Professor of Biology and former Kasling Lecturer. Since beginning his 33-year career at SUNY Fredonia in 1971, Dr. Mantai had earned the State University Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching and was named a Distinguished Teaching Professor. He founded the Biology Department's Tropical Biology courses in Costa Rica and Panama (previously in Jamaica). He will continue the program in retirement, and is taking his next class to Central America in Spring 2005.

  • Mr. Daniel Berggren, Professor of Communication. A past winner of the President's Award for Excellence in teaching, Mr. Berggren joined the Communication faculty at SUNY Fredonia in 1977. He is a member of the local folk group, The Newton Street Irregulars, a founder of the Folk Music Weekend at the College Lodge, a recording artist and folk singer, and long-time advisor and inspiration to Fredonia Radio Systems. He is returning to his hometown roots in the Adirondacks, where he will continue his musical career.

  • Dr. Brenda Joyce Stephens, Professor of Sociology. Dr. Stephens began her career at SUNY Fredonia in 1977. She is the author of the book, Loners, Losers, and Lovers: Elderly Tenants in a Slum Hotel, and has published 20 articles on issues of gerontology, death, interpersonal violence, criminology, and victimology.   • Mr. Robert Jordan, Professor of Music and former Kasling Lecturer. A past winner of the State University Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, Mr. Jordan had been with the School of Music since 1980. He is an internationally-recognized concert pianist who has performed in Europe, North and South America, West Africa, and Japan. His gift to the Fredonia College Foundation endowed the Mamie and Ira Jordan Minority Scholarship Achievement Award.

  • Dr. Karen Mills-Courts, Professor of English. Dr. Mills-Courts is a past winner of the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and joined the SUNY Fredonia Department of English faculty in 1981. Her book, Poetry as Epitaph, was nominated for several awards, including the American Poetry Society's best book on poetry and the Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Award. Dr. Mills-Courts is also a 1972 Fredonia graduate.

  • Dr. Joann Parla, Associate Professor of Education. Dr. Parla had been a member of the College of Education faculty since 1992 and was Principal Investigator of the Project Safari program, which helped train teachers for cultural and linguistic diversity in their classrooms.
