Campus gears up for Family Weekend
| The
red carpet -- lined with tours, delicious food and live performances --
will be rolled out during Family Weekend, Sept. 28 to 30, when SUNY
Fredonia welcomes parents and family members of its more than 5,000
students to campus. "Family Weekend is a tradition at SUNY Fredonia,
and a great time to re-connect students with their loved ones after the
busy first month of the semester. There are activities for people of
all ages, and we encourage families to visit on this special
weekend." Registration will be held Friday, 3 to 7 p.m., at the
Williams Center. Festivities begin with a buffet with hot hors

| Dr. Tillery will assist athletes at Special Olympics in China
|
Kim Tillery, above, has been selected as one of about a dozen
audiologists from the United States to go to China in late September to
conduct hearing assessments on thousands of Special Olympic
athletes. Dr. Tillery, who chairs the Speech Pathology and
Audiology department, will serve on behalf of Healthy Athletes, an
umbrella organization formed in 1996 to help Special Olympics athletes
improve their health and fitness with the overall goal to enhance
sports experience and improve well-being. She and her U.S. colleagues
will train another 17 to 25 audiologists from Asia and New Zealand in
the protocol to serve such a large population with unique needs in an
efficient and reliable manner ...Read more

| A
program to showcase the strength and breadth of the offerings of the
State University of New York, "Operation Inform," will be hosted
Thursday, Sept. 27, in the Williams Center at SUNY Fredonia. Attending
will be over 100 school guidance counselors from 49 schools within a
100 mile radius of the university. Director of Admissions Christopher
Dearth noted, "It is an absolute pleasure to host these high school
professionals for SUNY Operation Inform. Not only are we highlighting
the value and importance of a SUNY education, we are also showcasing

Creating "A Burning Desire to Read" is the goal of SUNY Fredonia's Reed
Library in partnership with foundations, schools, and libraries
throughout Chautauqua and Cattaraugus counties in promoting The Big
Read. The effort, one of 117 funded nationally as an initiative of the
National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), is designed to restore reading

| Two programs get federal funding
| The
College of Education at SUNY Fredonia has been awarded two federal
grants totaling $3 million over the next five years to continue its
English Language Acquisition (ELA) program and to also establish the
new Bringing Resources that Incorporate Development in General
Education (BRIDGE) program. "It's highly unusual to have two grants
funded from the same source to one institution," said Dr. Barbara
Mallette, principal investigator for the Project BRIDGE grant and
professor in the Language, Learning and Leadership department at SUNY
Fredonia. Both are designed to help schools serve growing student

Fredonia senior Social Work majors Briana Palmer of Silver Creek, Craig
Felton of Jamestown, and Jessica Slomiany of Dunkirk will have an
opportunity to complete their field placement in a local public child
welfare agency, take a course specific to child welfare practice and
put their skills to work right after graduation. They are among the
first beneficiaries of the New York State Child Welfare Scholarship
Program, an effort to recruit high-achieving undergraduate social work

Faculty and Staff urged to give
Vice President for University Advancement David M. Tiffany announced that preparations are underway for the 2007-08 All-Campus Appeal. The October campaign of the Fredonia College Foundation
is an opportunity for faculty and staff to support student scholarships
and build program and departmental endowments. All faculty and staff
are encouraged to participate in the appeal through payroll deduction
or gifts of cash to the Fredonia College Foundation. Donors wishing to
establish new endowments should contact Tim Murphy in the Foundation Office at extension 3321.
Another high ranking for Fredonia
Robert Mead-Colegrove (Campus Life) reports
that SUNY Fredonia is 12th in the top 50 U.S. chapters of the
Golden Key Honor Society in terms of membership. "Just wanted to share
the good news," Bob said.
Lifelong Learning moves
Director Eric L. Skowronski announced that the
Office of Lifelong Learning & Special Programs has moved to new
headquarters in the Williams Center, Room S125. "This office
coordinates a variety of activities at SUNY Fredonia including
Continuing Education Credit Study, Summer Sessions, J-Term, and
noncredit programs," he said.
Election year theme assigned to next Convocation
The Convocation Committee is currently making plans for 2008-2009, member Linda Brigance announced.
"Because 2008 is a presidential election year, we plan to focus on
encouraging civic engagement in national/global affairs," she
said. "We are currently soliciting suggestions for the presenter
of the annual Maytum Convocation Lecture. Past speakers have
included poet Maya Angelou, activist Robert Kennedy, Jr., and this
year's speaker, Dr. Spencer Wells, head of the National Geographic
Genographic Project (he is speaking Nov. 7). Suggestions for the
2008 convocation speaker should be sent by email to Linda Brigance. The
official convocation theme for programs will be announced at a later
date.
Student travel funds available
The Office of Student Creative Activity
and Research (OSCAR) announces the availability of student travel
funds. Students traveling to conferences or other approved
academic events can apply by submitting a completed travel form to Jennifer Dyck (psychology). Contact Dr. Dyck (3828) for more information.
Walk against suicide
Dr. Dani (Vanesa) McKinney (psychology) writes, "I'm writing to tell you that I'll be walking in the American Federation for Suicide Prevention Out of the Darkness Community Walk
