Construction of SUNY College at Fredonia Natatorium April 2000 - April 2002
This is an $8.8 million SUNY Construction Fund project funded by New York State.
The 26,283 sq. ft. facility was designed by Wendel, of Buffalo, under head architect Brian Brady. Wendel consulted with architect and master swimmer Jimmy Goldman, who designed the pool at Carnegie Mellon University.
Concept Construction of Elma is the builder. Tom Kidder of Concept Construction is the project manager. The construction portion of the project is $7.3 million.
The Natatorium is an addition to the fieldhouse at Fredonia (Steele Hall) and will include the following features:
- NCAA regulation 8-lane swimming pool, with depth from 3-1/2 feet to 7 feet.
30 by 30 feet dive well with one 3-meter diving board, and two one-meter diving boards
- spectator seating for 600 people
- Wide deck area for teaching scuba and fitness related swim classes
- Men's locker room: 100 lockers
- Women's locker room: 100 lockers
- State of the art digital, touch pad timing system for swimming and diving events
- All equipment such as lane markers, water robots, handicapped lifts, and scoreboard
The addition includes a new entryway and main lobby to Steele Hall, with the following features:
- Large windows overlooking the pool area, with bench seating
- Exhibit space for Fredonia's Athletic Wall of Fame
- Multipurpose room for gatherings and receptions
- Custom floor tiling with inlaid college seal.
The natatorium will be used by the campus and community for classes, recreation, intercollegiate, and interscholastic competition
Completing the Fredonia recreation and athletics complex is Steele Hall, which houses an indoor track/basketball arena, ice arena, training and locker rooms, and offices, and Dods Hall, housing a fitness center, classrooms, gymnasium, racquetball courts, dance studio, locker rooms and offices.
