Young musicians will have the opportunity to work with top instructors while sharing a week of friendly fun with their peers as the State University of New York at Fredonia School of Music hosts its 15th annual Fredonia Summer Band Camp from Sunday, June 26 through Saturday, July 2.
Daily activities will include band rehearsal, chamber ensemble rehearsal, jazz ensemble rehearsal, musicianship classes, master classes and such recreational activities as softball, tennis, racquetball and picnics. Evening concerts will feature performances by the SUNY Fredonia Faculty Brass and Woodwind Ensembles and visits from guest artists and professional musicians. Band camp students will have the opportunity to perform a chamber music concert on Friday, July 1.
Instructors will include Raymond Stewart, director of the SUNY Fredonia Concert Band, and Bruce Johnstone, director of Jazz Studies in the SUNY Fredonia School of Music. Mr. Stewart is Assistant Professor of Tuba and Principal Tuba of the American Composers Orchestra while Mr. Johnstone is a well-known saxophonist who has performed with the Brecker Brothers, Maynard Ferguson, Dexter Gordon, the Woody Herman band and others. In addition, numerous members of the School of Music faculty and special guests will round out the summer camp teaching roster.
Fredonia Summer Band Camp is open to students entering grades nine through 12. Registration for Fredonia Summer band Camp is $595 and will cover the cost of housing, meals and a professional recording of the final concert. Commuter tuition is $315 and does not include the cost of housing or meals. A limited number of scholarships are offered. These awards are generally given to young musicians whose choice of instrumentation enhances the overall ensemble – for example, oboists, bassoonists, bass clarinetists, French hornists and low brass players.
Students are encouraged to bring an alarm clock, radio, swimsuit, towel, tennis rackets and footwear, rain gear, board games for free time, solos or etudes for practice, and spending money. Participants will need to bring their instrument as well as extra reeds, valve oil and other musical supplies. Lockers in Mason Hall can be used to store instruments but campers must provide their own padlocks.
