February events focus on Black music history at SUNY Fredonia

Dr. Horace Boyer Nearly a dozen events, most of them highlighting a music theme, are planned in February to observe Black History Month at SUNY Fredonia.
 
On Friday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m., in the Multipurpose Room of the Williams Center, Frankie and Doug Quimby (the Georgia Sea Island Singers), will perform Negro spirituals. The duo has toured throughout the world, sharing their songs and stories set against the history and mystique of the Georgia Sea Islands. Their audiences have included universities, schools, museums, conventions, and conferences. The Quimbys' performance exalts in remembering and keeping alive two centuries of African-American folk heritage.
 
The rest of the month's events are:
  • Golden Age of Gospel: Dr. Horace Boyer will present the lecture/concert, "The Old Ship of Zion," on Monday, Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. A vocal soloist, author, and musical director, he has overseen such musicals as "Purlie," "Do Lord, Remember Me," and James Baldwin’s "Blues for Mr. Charlie." He is the author of How Sweet the Sound: the Golden Age of Gospel (University of Illinois Press; 2000).
     
  • Gospel Movie Night: Based on the best-selling non-fiction book of the same name by Bishop T.D. Jakes, the film, Woman Thou Art Loosed, will be shown Thursday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m., in S104 of the Williams Center (the film is rated R for violence, sexual content and drug use).
     
  • "Topics on Jazz" Panel Discussion: A panel discussion on jazz will be held Monday, Feb. 14, at 6:30 p.m. in S-104 of the Williams Center. The panel features Karen Wilson, a singer-storyteller and Ph.D. candidate at the University of California—Riverside, who has performed at New York’s Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Museum.
     
  • An Evening of Jazz with Macy Favor Big Band: Macy Favor is a master of the jazz musical idiom, leading his own big band and serving as a past president of Buffalo’s Colored Musicians Club. Joined by Bruce Johnstone, SUNY Fredonia faculty member and director of Fredonia’s Big Bands, the Macy Favor Big Band will perform Friday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m. in the Williams Center.
     
  • "The Beginning of Hip Hop," Hip Hop Lecture: Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 6:30 p.m. in the Williams Center Room S-104, there will be a lecture, "The Beginning of Hip Hop."
     
  • Black Jeopardy: Thursday, Feb. 24, at 6:30 p.m. in Room S-104 Williams Center, "Black Jeopardy" will test competitors’ knowledge of black history and other African-American facts.
     
  • MC Battle Rap Contest in the Spot Café: A group of 16 rappers will lyrically battle for the number one spot during the "MC Battle Rap Contest" Friday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Spot. The winner signs a contract to record their own song on an original music track produced by Cheeky Beats Music production.
     
  • Closing Ceremonies: The Message in the Music: On Monday, Feb. 28, Dr. Doug Daniels will be the guest speaker for Black History Month Closing Ceremonies, entitled, "The Message in the Music." The event starts at 6 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Williams Center.
