Folk Music Weekend continues into 30th year as a Fredonia tradition

For the 30th year since its creation by a group of enthusiasts among the faculty, the SUNY Fredonia Folk Music Weekend will feature concerts, workshops, singing, and contra and square dancing with guest musicians in a retreat-like setting at the College Lodge.

All are welcome to any portion of the activities, which start Friday, Oct. 29 and continue through lunch Sunday, October 31. The cost, including two overnights and five meals, is $15 for SUNY Fredonia students and $55 for all others.

One of the founders is Geosciences Professor Emeritus Richard Gilman. "Through the years we have featured nationally known musicians," he said. "This year is no exception but with a bit of a difference....We have invited four former Fredonia students, who have made their mark in the folk music world, and their groups to be our special guests."

The guest musicians are Dan Duggan, '78 (business administration), a national hammered dulcimer champion; John Kirk , a singer and fiddler who plays just about any stringed instrument and whistle; Chris Koldewey, '87 (music education), a Shantyman at Mystic Seaport Museum; singer/songwriter and instrumentalist, and Dave Sturtevant, '86 (sound recording technology), who, with his wife Kelly Armor, is recording vocal groups in Madagascar . In all, 10 guest musicians will teach and play for the weekend, including newly retired and former Fredonia communications professor, Dan Berggren , who will be returning for the festivities. E-mail Dr. Gilman for more information.
