Winners announced for 2005 Math Challenge at SUNY Fredonia

Winners of the 2005 Math Challenge held at SUNY Fredonia recently were announced by Professor Keary Howard, faculty member of the SUNY Fredonia mathematics department, which sponsors the competition each spring.
With 12 high schools participating from the tri-county area, the SUNY Fredonia math faculty led 184 students and their 18 teachers through games and competitions that challenged their mathematics and problem-solving skills. Teams competed from the school districts of Eden, Lake Shore, North Collins, Panama, West Seneca West, Fredonia, Orchard Park, Pioneer, Jasper-Troupsburg, Southwestern, Frewsburg, and Springville-Griffith Institute.
First Place winners were:
- Fredonia Central School for "Stat Attack," a computer quiz involving the analysis of weather and roller coaster data. The winning team consisted of Ryan Lundin, Will Stahl, Angelo Belliotti, and Casey Twichell.
- Fredonia Central School for the small school "Family Feud" competition, based on the television game show. The winning team members were Casey Twichell, Ian MacPherson, Angelo Belliotti, Ryan Lundin, and Olivia Penharlow.
- Lake Shore Central School won the large school "Family Feud" competition, based on the television game show. The winning team members were Jon Anthon, Pete Pijanowski, Brian Tyler, Brad Flower, and Erin Parks.
- Eden Central School for "Let's go Racing," a computer programming challenge featuring speedy robots. The winning team members were Dan Wallmeyer, David Brenner, Evan Warner, Kengie Norman, Megan Gonser, and Brian Bove.
- Pioneer Central School for "Perfect Pyramid," which challenged the team to build with available materials a reproduction of one of the world's greatest wonders--large enough to house one member of the team. The winning team members were Erin Brauen, Hannah Mayer, Kim Wolfe, Erica Vallance, Jenny Buchanan, and Andrea Roberts.
- Springville-Griffith Institute Central School for "The Great WKRP Terminal Turkey Drop," which required the winning team to aggregate the velocity totals of three objects (none of them turkeys) dropped from the roof of Maytum Hall, which, at nine floors, is the tallest building on campus. The winning team members were Ken Kellner, Ben Hrycirk, Jenna Deegan, and Jacob Runge.
Second Place winners were:
- Pioneer Central School for "Stat Attack;" team members were Kristina Conroy, Katie Bailey, and Erin Mannion.
- Orchard Park High School for "Let's go Racing;" team members were Amanda Nicholls, Tom Morrisey, Katie Ford, Patricia Rich, and Jennie Walia.
- Jasper-Troupsburg High School for "Perfect Pyramid;" team members were Joe Lubberts, Kyle Scott, Brandon Schenck, Jenna Hunt, Kelin Wheaton, and Megan Metcalf.
- Springville-Griffith Institute Central School for "The Great WKRP Terminal Turkey Drop;" team members were Andy Scharf, Kim Rugg, Danielle Gleason, Amanda Roland, and Steve Collins.
