Our most recent project: Gershwin's Greatest Hits

The video at the right was filmed on Friday, May 16, 2014 at State University of New York's Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center. The theme of our annual commencement-eve concert was "Gershwin's Greatest Hits."

Bruce Johnstone conducted the all-professional Little Apple Big Band with student singers from the BFA musical theater and music programs at Fredonia.

This arrangement of Gershwin's "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off" is by Nelson Riddle and published by Ejazz Lines Publications.  Originally written for Ella Fitzgerald and the Gershwin Songbook series, we found that the arrangements also works nicely as a boy/girl duet.

GROUP ONE: CHARTS FROM MAJOR ONLINE RETAILERS
These stores sell charts of multiple publishers.

EJAZZLINES.COM *

http://www.ejazzlines.com/

This company, based in Saratoga Springs NY, is one of my favorite places to order big band charts.  Their web site works extremely well and their staff is knowledgeable and very helpful.

You can also sign up for their monthly newsletter so you know about new charts as soon as they come out.

A vast (and fast) searchable catalog of many published jazz charts.  They have their own line of charts (Jazzline Publications) which consists of many of the great standards by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Helen O'Connell -- not transcriptions, but taken and licensed from the original manuscripts.)  They are also the American distributor for Lush Life Music -- another of my favorite sources.  They have a lot of the standards as well as many of the more hard-to-find and obscure titles.

Being located in the Nashville area has placed us at the heart of the Christian music industry and over the years have worked closely with many of the publishers. We've been uniquely placed between the publisher and the Church and have found ourselves a resource for thousands of titles many of which are out of print and available only from us.

Danny Fratinawww.dannyfratina.com *

This site went up in November of 2012, and it has been worth the wait.

Danny Fratina, born January 6, 1985, comes from Arlington, Texas. After graduating from high school in 2003, he attended Berklee College of Music to pursue a four-year degree in Jazz Composition. While at school, Danny was a top student, writing for all the major bands and playing lead trumpet for all the big bands, all while leading his own chamber ensembles and gigging around town.

A Beantown ChristmasDanny has done a lot of work for the Beantown Swing Orchestra in Boston including their Christmas Album which contains five original compositions in the swing style!

After graduating in May of 2007, Danny spent two years in Boston working for various bands around the region, transcribing, arranging, and composing mostly for jazz orchestra. In the last two years, he has completed over one hundred transcriptions for large and medium jazz ensembles and arranged over fifty pieces ranging from jazz to pop, rock to techno, and video game music to metal. He has been a prolific composer of
new works as well, writing new music for his own swing octet, other New England bands, and even a venture into film with original big band swing music for the 2008 film My Best Friend’s Girl. He has been commissioned to write and arrange for a variety of groups, from Boston-based Quintessential Brass Quintet to high schools in Seattle, Washington. In 2008 he was commissioned to compose an original fanfare for the United Nations in Boston.

Big Band Christmas Charts!

Order charts here.

 http://www.verville-music.com/jazz-charts/

Original Compositions and Arrangements by Scott Verville including a couple of Christmas charts.

Editor's note: I especially like "Some Christmas Favorites" -- a 6 minute medley including "Jolly Old St. Nicholas, Frosty the Snowman, Jingle Bell Rock, Jingle Bells, We Three Kings and We Wish You a Merry Christmas." (The band members have a bit of singing to do on this one.) I also like Scott's "Carol of the Bells" which comes two ways: for 5/4/4/4 big band (with auxilary percussion optional) or for concert band.

Daryl McKenzie - composer, arranger, trombonist and music director

http://dmck.customer.netspace.net.au/PrintMusic.html

Just discovered this musician based in Australia.  There are number of standards in contemporary style as well as original tunes.  I especially liked the up-tempo ensemble arrangement of "I Got Rhythm."

Denver and the Mile High Orchestra

Repertoire includes many originals as well as contemporary versions of standards, including Christmas tunes and patriotic ones.

While the rest of us were worrying about "Y2K" a group of talented friends were worrying about the future of music as we know it.

The year was 1999 and Denver Bierman and his merry band of musicians that would come to be known as the Mile High Orchestra were putting together an act that would take them literally to the ends of the earth. The group of Belmont University students took the music they loved and combined it with a hot, pop style, mixed in a slick tight stage show and took it on the road.

Blending a red hot horn section, along with jazz and big band roots, Denver and the Mile High Orchestra have created a sound that is unlike any other. With Denver Bierman, writing and arranging the band's music, the diverse sounds of legends such as Stevie Wonder, Chicago, and Earth Wind and Fire combine for a fresh look at contemporary pop. The rest, as they say, is history.

Andrew Meronek

Andrew is a a trombonist, composer, and music instructor. I play lead trombone in the Bridge Project Big Band and the Nighthawks Jazz Dectet, both to which I have also contributed some compositions and arrangements. I provide private brass instruction (plus the occasional clinic) at Evola Music.

Rick Lawn

I really like the "Hymn to 9/11"  Many original contemporary instrumentals.

Also has original charts for 10-piece band, played by "Power of 10" Philadelphia's premiere big band.

Richard (Rick) Lawn recently retired as Dean of the College of Performing Arts at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia (www.uarts.edu). Prior to moving to Philadelphia he was the Founding Director of Jazz Studies, Chair of the Department of Music, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin. Before joining the Texas faculty Rick was Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Northern Iowa

Chris Hansen Payloadz Site  *

This appears to have same music as above using a third party service that allows direct download of music using PayPal.  There are many transcriptions.  You have to read the description

Offers direct downloads through Paypal.  Instrumentations varry greatly between selections.  Some are for full big band 5/4/4/4. Others are are for smaller combos.  Some have strings.  Many are transcriptions of popular singers like Harry Connick, Jr. etc.  "Christmas Dreaming for Baritone vocal soloist, SATB Choir and full big band (for the bridge) looks promising.

bigbandmusic.com  - Rob Catlender

I really liked Everybody Needs a Best Friend (vocal) from the Movie "Ted." Other hard-to-find big band vocals include Fire (Bruce Springsteen), That’s the way (I like it)  (Harry KC Wayne Casey/Richard Finch), Skylark (Hoagy Carmichael - SATB Close Harmony), and Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You (Bob Crewe/Bob Gaudio).  Instrumental arrangements include Nostalgia in Times Square (Charles Mingus), Queen's Crazy little thing called love (Freddie Mercury), and My one and only love (Wood/ Mellin).  Many original tunes as well.

Are you looking for new music for your big band?  Have a look on my website with my compositions and arrangements for big band.

Jazzcharts.net

Supplying band directors and band leaders with music that swings, grooves, challenges, and educates young musicians and professional musicians alike

Our Story

We here at Jazzcharts.net are full time working jazz musicians, jazz educators, jazz composers and publishers. We are often asked to adjudicate high school jazz festivals where we offer up our expertise about the performance of this great art form. In our opinion, the biggest thing working against most high school jazz bands is not the talent of the individual players, but the music that they are performing. Most of the music, in our experience, is either too hard, too easy, and harmonically, rhythmically, and melodically unimaginative. This does a disservice to your audience as well as your students/fellow musicians.

Inside this website, you’ll find music that swings, grooves, has depth, and is playable by bands of any level. No longer will you have to sacrifice the sound of your band to accommodate charts that are written without the jazz tradition in mind. We also make sure that no chart goes out without the proper attention to formatting and editing. This ensures that our music will be played exactly as the composer intended it the first time your band reads it.

Also, you may notice that we don’t keep a huge catalog of jazz charts. This is because we believe that keeping fewer high quality charts is better than having thousands of charts with a few “keepers” in the mix. Rest assured that each chart you find on this site is of the highest quality.

Big Band Charts by Arranger Dave Wolpe *

http://www.wolpechart.com/

I have never met a Dave Wolpe chart I did not like.  Most are in the classic Swing style.  He has some very nice charts for SATB and big band.

Dave Wolpe is one of the best jazz band arrangers working today. He now has his own site and you can order directly from him. Some are available for direct down load.  Contains some of the tunes from "In the Christmas Mood." He even sold me an out-of-print tune!

Tom Kubis

http://www.tomkubis.com/

This is a good example of why you should go directly to the arranger's web site.  This site has many, many charts, only some of which seem to be sold through some of the distributors I usually use.

Lot of Chirstmas Jazz Esmble Charts.

Tom Kubis is a jazz composer/arranger, woodwind player, recording artist, band leader.

Tom was recognized in the middle 60's as an outstanding saxophone and flute player. He performed on saxophone with such jazz greats as Frank Rosolino, Bill Watrous, Arturo Sandoval, Jack Sheldon, Pete Christlieb and Louis Bellson.

Unique Christmas arrangements for big band and choir!

http://bradleysowash.com/?page_id=224

This is one of the few places I have found that specializers in big band wit SATB arrangements.  Audio files available.  Has a number of 2-tune medleys in a variety of big band styles.

In  2008, Richard Rudolph, director of music for Convenant Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, VA commissioned and premiered four sacred jazz Christmas arrangements for Big Band and combined gospel and traditional choirs. The community response was to fill this large church with two standing-room-only shows. The church followed up by commissioning five more arrangements that premiered in January 2010 rather than December 2009 due to a big snowstorm which shut the town and highways. Despite this unusual timing for a Christmas concert the house was packed again.

Jazz Originals by Paul Busby - some are FREE!

Some of these jazz pieces were written over thirty years ago, while others are very recent. Some are very straight-forward, others are quite adventurous pieces in the "post-bebop" mould.

This one looks interesting to me:
Christmas Time Is Here / HaveYourYourself A Merry Little Christmas (Guaraldi, Blane, Martin) This tour de force will be a great addition to any holiday program.  Feature your tenor sax soloist on the beautiful ballad from Charlie Brown’s Christmas.  Woodwind doubles and flugel horns provide a sweet background.  Hold on to your hats during this burning swing treatment of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.  Soprano sax and trombone are featured, as well as the whole ensemble!  Lead trumpet is in the limelight too!  (up to high F#)  This will bring the house down!  Difficult.

Welcome, and thanks for checking out my web site!  I'm a jazz saxophonist, woodwind doubler, composer/arranger, and educator living in Connecticut.  I hope that you enjoy perusing the compositions, arrangements, and audio samples for big band and small group.  Enjoy the music!

From Greg: Believe it or not, I've been writing arrangements since I first started playing saxophone in 5th Grade. Later, as I worked my way through college, I wrote 3 horn combo charts for my wedding band. Once I received my Bachelor's degree (and later my Master's,) I continued honing my skills with larger ensembles, Big Bands, Concert Bands, Orchestra, etc. As a public school instrumental music teacher and gigging professional musician in the Detroit area, I continue to do what I enjoy...write charts and perform!! Check out my available charts. See anything you like? What do you need? Let me know! I specialize in transcriptions.

http://terrificbigbandcharts.com/

Editor's note: I just discovered this web site on January 3, 2011 and it looks very promising.  They have quite a number of instrumental and vocal not charts not available anywhere else.

Terrific Big Band Music Charts was founded in 2009. The company might be new on the internet, but a devoted work ethic of professional customer service, along with a pure love of big band and swing music will result in us making our mark as the preferred provider of big band arrangements and first-rate music charts.

Why? Because the website was created as a labor of love. Not only is founder John-Eric Booth an internet entrepreneur and businessman, but is also an accomplished big band singer, recording artist and performer (go to www.johnericbooth.com).

“Terrific Big Band Music Charts is just one of my efforts to assist in keeping the Great American Songbook alive.  I have a knack for finding incredible chart arrangements… some which have been out of print for a long, long time. And I love the classic charts penned by Billy May, Nelson Riddle and others, just to name a few.  Some of their arrangements are really hard to round up. Thanks to my network of transcribers, bandleaders, and some publishers, we are making it possible to obtain these great charts at a reasonable price. And thus… the website was born.”

John Philips Music Service

New listing as of Jan. 23, 2011!  Check out these orginal compositions.  Also has concert band arrangements.

The arrangements in this collection are all new and have good lines and rich harmonies. They are written to be logical and melodic and easy to play and easy to listen to.  There is a theme or style to each one and this helps keep the players interested.  The technique required is as small as possible because the object is to make music not something that sounds like a scale book.

My father is KEITH PETERS, and for as long as I can remember, and I am over 60, he has had his own band, based in Sheffield, UK. He has always done all the arrangements .... pop, dance, swing, etc.,....but now his focus is on the Big Band sound. He has almost 400 charts, some of which are for sale.....no trading, I am afraid.

They are either transcriptions(also referred to as "record copies" or "takedowns") or arrangements (also referred to as "originals" or "specials"). "The transcriptions are generally note-for-note copies of the arrangements that the original band recorded. The arrangements are my own "original" arrangements.

All the titles shown were originally written for or commissioned by professional, working ensembles. Most of them are suitable for college-level ensembles but are NOT recommended for high school ensembles or any beginner-level groups. This music is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for medium to advanced college ensembles, military jazz-dance-stage bands, adult community jazz ensembles & professional-level rehearsal bands who are looking for music that is different and unique music apart from and beyond the jazz music publication industry's standard fare.
