Academic Honors

Dean's List

Approximately one month after the end of each fall and spring semester, the college announces the names of students who are recorded on the Dean's List.  Announcements are sent to students' hometown newspapers.

Students who have been recorded on the Dean's List, will have access to a Dean's List Certificate via YourConnection. The student will log into YourConnection and select the Student tab, then click on the Shared Documents link. They can then select Dean's List Certificate. The certificate can be downloaded and/or printed via this link. In addition, the Dean's List notation appears on the student's official university transcript, for each semester that Dean's List is accomplished.

To be eligible, full-time students must be enrolled in at least 12 credits that semester. Part-time, matriculated students are also eligible after accruing a quality point average of 3.30 or higher calculated after the completion of credit hours in multiples of 12 (12 credits, 24 credits, 36 credits) in consecutive semesters if they maintain matriculated status. Courses with P or S grades are not included in the 12 hours. Although a Dean's List is not issued for summer or J-term, part-time students' work in these sessions will count towards the accrual of credits in multiples of 12 if it is completed at Fredonia (via face-to-face or online courses). A decision not to complete summer or J-term session courses will not be considered a stop-out; part-time and full-time students' status as consecutively enrolled is measured only using fall and spring semesters.

Honors at Commencement

Latin honors are conferred only with Bachelor's degrees, not Master's degrees.

Latin honors are based on the Grade Point Average from a possible 4.00 GPA:

• Summa Cum Laude = 3.70 or higher
• Magna Cum Laude = 3.50 to 3.69
• Cum Laude = 3.30 to 3.49

Gold honors cords are worn at Commencement by undergraduates who have achieved 3.30 GPA or higher, and are based on the Grade Point Average as of the most recent semester completed.

Honors on Diploma

Latin honors printed on diplomas are based on the entire academic record of the student. Only those credits earned at Fredonia will be computed in the final average.

Students may graduate with honors only when they have completed at least 45 hours of graded work at State University of New York at Fredonia. Graded work includes all courses which carry quality points.  Graded work DOES NOT include courses which are graded "satisfactory/unsatisfactory" or "pass/fail."
