Wireless Network Service

Wireless Network Service

SUNY Fredonia is pleased to offer students, faculty/staff and guests in the residence halls and in academic buildings wireless network services that are convenient, secure, and reliable. The purpose of this information is to briefly define the wireless network services available on campus and to also assist with providing our users with reasonable expectations of what wireless service can provide. Despite the convenience and rapidly growing popularity of our wireless services, they are very unlikely to provide the same performance, consistency, or reliability as our high speed wired Ethernet service.

The SUNY Fredonia wireless service complements our high speed wired Ethernet service and is not meant to be a substitute. As such, all students, staff/faculty and guests that reside in the residence halls have a dedicated high speed Ethernet port available to them in their individual rooms. This high speed Ethernet port is recommended for use if you are using applications that utilize large amounts of bandwidth (i.e. streaming video, gaming, video conferencing and large file transactions). Ethernet cables can be purchased at the FSA bookstore and other stores in the area.

Please note that the SUNY Fredonia Networks (wired/wireless) are primarily for academic use and all wireless network users need to utilize their eServices I.D. and password for access to the wireless and wired network.

SUNY Fredonia offers the following Wireless Networks (SSIDs):

FREDsecure

FREDsecure is the SUNY Fredonia Secure Wireless Service which utilizes 802.1X to provision WPA2-Enterprise to a diverse array of network devices campus-wide. It is highly recommended that all campus wireless network users utilize the FREDsecure service if you are accessing online financial services, online shopping and any official campus eService (ANGEL, FREDMail, YourConnection etc.).

RESNET

RESNET is the open and clear (unsecured) wireless network SSID available to students, staff/faculty and guests living and working in the residence halls who wish to use gaming devices and other non – 802.1x and WPA2 Enterprise compatible devices.

FredoniaState

FredoniaState is the open and clear (unsecured) wireless network SSID available for students, staff/faculty and guests in academic buildings.
