These four communities for first-year students (Freshmen) offer opportunities to share common interests with other students and faculty advisors. Students from any major live together in designated suites of Hemingway Hall, with a common space for each living learning community. Although each community includes men and women, suites are single-gender. In addition to regular residence hall programming, students who choose these living learning communities have special programs, activities, and occasional meals together. These programs have their own faculty advisors in addition to residence hall staff which provide an extra support system during the transition to college life.

hHonors House is a residential experience for students who have been accepted in the Honors Program. Residents will have opportunities to be in an environment with other students who like academic challenges and to enrich their learning through special programs offered by faculty and staff, sessions with speakers, cultural activities and events, service projects, and shared meals. During the year, students will also have the opportunity to learn about faculty research or to work with faculty from the honors program.  Students of any major are welcome!

hHealth and Wellness House is for those who share an interest in promoting fitness and healthy lifestyles. In a range of fun programs and activities, residents will have opportunities to learn about nutrition, proper exercise, stress management, and other topics related to health. Among the many activities for this living-learning community will be shared recreational activities, special sessions with speakers and campus guests, shared service projects, discussions, films—maybe even cooking together! Students from any major and any level of fitness are welcome!

sSustainability House offers exciting opportunities to learn about and directly engage in environmental discussions, events, and service initiatives. Residents will meet with faculty, student, and community leaders involved in local-to-global sustainability. They also attend related campus and community events, meet with high-profile speakers, attend films and discussions, and learn how to engage directly in diverse sustainability initiatives on campus and in the surrounding communities. All majors are welcome! Participating department and program faculty include the Environmental Sciences, Economics, History, English, Chemistry, Biology, International Studies, and Political Science in collaboration with the SUNY Fredonia campus Go Green effort and the Fredonia Academic Community Engagement (FACE) Center.

crCross-Cultural House is for international and non-international students who are especially interested in learning about and understanding cultural diversity. We now have the capacity to communicate directly with people from diverse backgrounds, both within the United States and around the world. But understanding others’ perspectives, values, and needs remains a challenge. This community offers opportunities for special programming on this topic, discussions and films, field trips, special sessions with visiting speakers, and service projects that engage participants from different backgrounds. Students of all backgrounds and majors are welcome! Participating faculty and staff include members of the Cross-Cultural Renga; a faculty-staff learning community that explores issues of diversity and identity in our community.
