New Student Information
The purpose of this page is to provide information about the computing resources available in the residence halls at SUNY Fredonia. Also, it is meant to ensure a quick and trouble-free experience when you arrive on campus and connect your computer to the internet from your residence hall room as well as throughout the semester.
What you will need before you come to campus:
- A PC-Compatible or Macintosh Computer that is in good working condition
Do not bring broken equipment to school. During the first few weeks of the semester ResNet Technicians will be busy assisting over 2,500 students with their internet connection. They will not have the resources to rebuild computers that were broken over the summer. Information on buying a new computer through our campus purchasing program can be found here, as well as minimum and recommended specifications can be found here. - An Ethernet card and cable
If you have an older computer, be sure to that there is a T-Base 10/100 Ethernet Card. All new computers within the last 3 years have at least one ethernet jack built into the computer. Don't forget an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the jack. - Anti-Virus Software
It is required that every computer connected to the campus network to run Anti-Virus software and keep its virus definitions updated. The campus provides Symantec Norton Anti-Virus software for students to utilize. It is available for download here.
- Operating System Software Updates
If your computer is running a Microsoft Operating System such as Windows XP or Windows Vista, you must regularly visit the Windows Update website and download any available updates. By default, the ResNet registration system will configure your pc to download updates automatically. - Printer
Many students find it very convenient to have a printer within their dorm room. Printers are also available in the academic side computer labs, but these are not accessible from the dorms.
