RESNET WIRELESS SERVICE
The ResNet Office has implemented a new wireless access service in all the Residence Hall Lobbies.
Why is the ResNet Wireless Access service being offered?
Over the years the ResNet Office has made persistent effort to meet the needs of our residents by trying to provide new services that are practical and that are driven by the demands of technology. Each year students are bringing more and more wireless access devices (laptops, PDAs etc) and expect to be able to use them not solely in academic areas but also in dining areas, cafes, and residence halls. This summer's implementation of wireless access in the residence halls is the first step in this direction and will allow us to gauge the effectiveness and use of this service in the unique environmental conditions that the residence halls present. Specific impetus for the service was to find a solution that would allow us to provide Internet connectivity for our many work studies & conference attendees that want to bring their laptops down to the lobby areas to use the Internet etc.
Who is able to use the ResNet Wireless Access service?
The ResNet Wireless Access service will function exactly like our current ResNet Registration system which means anyone that is a resident and has their F.I.D. can use the service. Conference attendees can use their V. I.Ds to register their computer to use the wireless access service as well.
Where will wireless access be available in the residence halls?
RD Offices, RA Offices, Smart Classrooms and most lobby areas. There will be very limited wireless access availability in first floor rooms and some second floor rooms, however in general, wireless access will NOT be available in residence halls rooms and personal wireless access devices will continue to be strictly prohibited. Again, the implementation of this service this summer is a first step, so we will only have limited coverage in your buildings.
How will students be made aware of the wireless service availability?
The ResNet Office has provided signs for your buildings and information on the ResNet website. The wireless service is also covered in Orientation. The ResNet Office will provide all support for this service. The ResNet Wireless Access service is completely separate from the ITS Wireless Access service offered in the academic areas, the Williams Center, and Starbucks.
