Dear Parent:
With our nation on high alert status, I want you to know the steps we have taken at SUNY Fredonia to maintain a safe and secure environment. SUNY Fredonia has always been a very safe campus, and we have no reason to suspect any change in this status. Nevertheless, we want to assure you that we will remain ever vigilant and take necessary precautions.
During this high alert period, we have instituted a number of heightened security measures, especially in our residence hall and classroom areas. Residence hall doors are already "card access" secured 24 hours a day, and public entrances to residence halls are continuously monitored with security cameras. However, we have increased the number of security patrols and each academic building coordinator has been asked to pay particular attention to security over the next few months.
We have an excellent University Police force of 15 officers, who work closely with area law enforcement officials to ensure the safety of our students. We also work closely with the Chautauqua County Health Department, Village of Fredonia, City of Dunkirk, and other local government agencies and hospitals in the coordination of services.
In conjunction with these other agencies, SUNY Fredonia has developed a detailed plan for campus safety and disaster preparedness. We also have developed a new web page with links to detailed information on emergency procedures, so students have access to the latest information regarding campus security. This information can be accessed by going to the SUNY Fredonia home page (www.fredonia.edu) and clicking on the link for security alert.
Students, faculty and staff have been asked to go about their normal business, but to notify University Police of any suspicious activity, such as unauthorized people in restricted areas and abandoned parcels, bags, or vehicles. In the unlikely event of an actual emergency, the campus community will be notified through a variety of regional and campus media including the new website, e-mail, campus newspaper, and postings on building doors.
SUNY Fredonia is a wonderful community, and students have a great sense of pride in the campus. Please be assured that we will take every precaution to maintain strong security, while continuing to provide the best possible education for your son or daughter. You are welcome to visit our website to learn more about our security preparedness.
Sincerely,
Dennis L. Hefner
President
