College Senate Meeting: March 13, 2000
Agenda Item: 7c
Description: GCP Committee Report to College Senate
Motion:
The GCP Committee recommends that the College Senate adopt the following two changes in the GCP requirements to become effective for freshman students entering Fredonia in F2000 and to be effective until a revised general education program is adopted by the campus.
- Of the 6 credits of natural science required under Part IIA of the current GCP, no more than 3 credits may be taken in mathematics/computer science.
- Of the 6 credits of arts and humanities required under Part IIB of the current GCP, 3 credits must be taken in the humanities and 3 credits must be taken in the arts. There will be one exception to this general rule. If a student chooses to take a course in the arts under the current GCP Part ID, by selecting a course in Part IDC, that student may take 6 credits of humanities under Part IIB.
Discussion of Motion: Minor adjustments to the current GCP requirements will enable Fredonia to fully satisfy 7 out of 10 of the SUNY Learning Outcomes. Three out of 10 areas (American History, Western Civ, and Foreign Language) will be addressed by providing a substantial number of courses which students would be encouraged to take as options within the existing requirements. The GCP Committee met to discuss the necessary modifications and passed the following motion, submitted to the College Senate 2/14 as informational, with a request for a vote on the motion on 3/13. (Please note that there is a minor change in the current wording of the motion from students to freshman students. ) These modifications are intended to bring the GCP requirements into greater compliance with the Trustees' Learning Outcomes during the interim period of F2000-F2001 while fully revised general education requirements are under consideration by the campus.
Report: At its meeting of 2/23/00 the GCP Committee passed a motion to forward its Preliminary General Education Revision Proposal to the College Senate as informational (see attached). The Committee is continuing its consultations campus-wide and anticipates submitting a revised proposal at the April College Senate meeting with a motion for a vote at the May college senate meeting or at a special session as needed.
