College Senate Meeting: May 8, 2000
Agenda Item: 7c
Description: Report of the Recycling Committee

Major accomplishments: We have placed large color-coded recycling bins in all dorms for recycling of plastic, paper, and glass. Blue plastic paper-recycle baskets have been placed in all department offices ( & chairs' offices, if separate), and administrative areas.

Our major initial thrust has been paper recycling because it represents the least challenge. We are setting up a system whereby faculty who wish to participate in paper recycling can receive a cardboard box with the Fredonia recycling logo at the Fenton and Thompson Copy Centers. These boxes formerly contained copy/printer paper (multi-ream cartons).

We are encouraging departments and admin. areas to utilize work study students to empty boxes into larger containers on loading docks. Dorm "recycling monitors" will be hired to make sure recycled materials are transferred to marked containers on dorm loading docks. BFI trucks remove paper from docks every Tuesday and Thursday. Janitors and cleaners should not be required to empty recycled materials.

In cooperation with Project Environment we have also printed up flyers and posters to educate the campus community about recycling efforts and how they can participate (an on-going effort). Our aim is to set up a self-perpetuating system that will not atrophy as "enthusiasts" graduate or retire. To that aim we will (1) enlist the aid of top administrators to support our efforts; (2) make sure that recycling tasks are carried out within the permanent college structure, so that tasks will be automatically passed on; (3) educate students, faculty, and staff about how they can participate in the program, and why it is important to do so.

Respectfully submitted 4-10-00
Jack Berkley, Chair Recycling Committee
