Agenda Item: 7a
Description: Report of the Academic Affairs Committee
Minutes for October 6, 2000 Academic Affairs Committee
Date: Friday, October 6, 2000
Time: 2:00 PM
Location: 8th floor Maytum conference room
Present: D. Ludlam [chair], J. Straight, T. Steinberg
1. Dr. John Hughson, along with a representation of faculty, spoke to the revised program in Media Arts. The program changes appear to be warranted and the new/revised courses make academic sense. The committee requested Dr. Hughson to structure the material in a format appropriate for inclusion in the college catalog, and to return the material to the committee as soon as possible. Dr. Hughson agreed to our request and will deliver packets to each committee member soon. Committee members are requested to review the packet and send their response to the chair. Baring any questions or concerns, the chair will then forward the proposal to the Academic VP.
2. Review of new Applied Mathematics track [new program] The program was approved and will be sent to the College Senate for its November meeting.
3. Review of new interdisciplinary minor in Journalism [new program] The packet contained an incomplete course proposal and will be held until it can be reviewed. Upon receiving the completed course proposal, the chair will forward the packet to the committee members for email comment.

7. Discussion of the Ad Hoc Sub-committee on cheating, Plagiarizing and Collusion. It was decided that Joe Straight will chair the sub-committee and that it will not start its work until the beginning of the Spring semester. At the current time, Academic Affairs Committee is missing a third of its membership and the work is mounting. With Joe, Ted and David all chair other committees with December deadlines, and after consultation with the Senate Executive Board, we have postponed the work on Plagiarism, etc. until second semester when it can be given the consideration it deserves.
8. Calendar sub-committee report:
The Calendar subcommittee met on Sept. 27 and agreed to recommend the following calendar for the academic year 2003/2004:
Fall 2003:
Registration: August 26 (Tues.)
Classes begin: August 27 (Wed.)
Labor Day: September 1 (Mon.)--no classes
Fall Break: October 6-7 (Mon.-Tues.)--no classes (Yom Kippur is on Oct. 6)
Redefined Day: October 8 (Wed.) defined as Monday (this is to make up for a shortfall of Mondays necessitated by observing Yom Kippur)
Thanksgiving Break: Nov. 24-28 (Mon.-Fri.)
Final Exams: Dec. 15-19 (Mon.-Fri.)
The fall calendar contains 70 class days, distributed as follows:
13 Mon., 13 Tues., 14 Wed., 15 Thurs., 15 Fri. (taking into account the redefined Wed.)
Spring 2003:
Martin Luther King Jr. Day: Jan. 19 (Mon.)
Registration: Jan. 21 (Wed.)
Classes begin: Jan. 22 (Thurs.)
Spring Break: Mar. 19-26 (Fri.-Fri.)
Travel Day: April 12 (Mon., Easter is April 11)
Final Exams: May 10-14 (Mon.-Fri.)
Graduation: May 15 (Sat.)
The spring calendar includes 70 class days, distributed as follows:
13 Mon., 14 Tues., 14 Wed., 15 Thurs., 14 Fri.
The committee also recommends a new guideline, as follows:
Schedule a separate break for Yom Kippur, if it does not coincide with Fall Break.
Any questions or comments from Academic Affairs? I am planning to bring this to the Senate in November. -- Submitted by Ellen Litwicki, sub-committee chair
9. Discussion of the GCP/CCC becoming sub-committee of AAC led to the conclusion that there was no objection to it being a sub-committee of AAC and that a small committee would function better than a large one. The process of electing/appointing members was still a point of discussion. Submitted by, David e. Ludlam, chair AAC
