College Senate Meeting: November 13, 2000
Agenda Item: 7a1
Description: Applied Mathematics Track for the Mathematics Major
I. Title of program: Applied Mathematics
We have developed two options within this track.
Applied Mathematics/Statistics and Operations Research Option and
Applied Mathematics/Economics Option
II. Department: This is a program in the Mathematics & Computer Science Department.
The Economics Option was developed with cooperation and consultation from the Economics Department.
III. Rationale: Presently we have programs for students who wish to teach mathematics and we have the Liberal Arts major in mathematics. The Liberal Arts major in mathematics is an excellent general program in mathematics for students who wish to do graduate work in mathematics. The Applied Math Track is intended for students who wish to go directly to the job market. Note that each of the options in the track requires the student to have a minor. We think that this added breadth, along with the specific applied course work in mathematics, will make these students very marketable.
IV. List of courses:
| Applied Math Track Core | Credits |
| CHEM 115 & 125 or PHYS 230 & 232 | 4 or 5 |
| CSIT 106 or 121 | 3 or 4 |

| 37 - 39 credit hours |
Applied Math/Statistics & Operations Research Option
This option requires the core above, a minor in a field to which statistics or operations research can be applied, and the following courses:
| Credits |
| STAT 355 | Mathematical Statistics - * new course | 3 |
| Two of the following 3 courses | 6 |

| === |
| 12 credit hours |
Total of 49 hours + a minor.
Applied Math/Economics Option
This option requires the core above and the following courses. Note that in satisfying these requirements the student will earn a minor in economics. Also, by completing three additional courses in economics, students in this track can earn a double major in Applied Mathematics and Economics.

VI. The following faculty from the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science teach the mathematics courses listed in the program:
Meral Arnavut
Nancy Boynton
Harris Kwong
Richard Marchand
James McKenna
Robert Rogers
Joseph Straight
Julia Wilson
Like all mathematics majors, students in the Applied Math track are required to take a chemistry or physics course with the associated lab course. These would be taught by a member of the Physics or Chemistry Department. Also, these students would be required to take a computer science course taught by a faculty member from computer science.
The Economics courses are taught by the Department of Economics:
Munir Choudhary
Marwan El Nasser
William Foeller
Amar Parai
Janice Peterson
Amin Sarkar
VI. No additional faculty are required to offer this program.
