Proposed Term Change for Senate Officers
Motion to amend the bylaws to change the terms of service for College Senate officers:To amend Article IV, Section 5, a. Chairperson to read in part:
"The Chairperson of the College Senate shall be the previous year's elected Vice Chairperson. The Chairperson shall assume office on June 1......The Chairperson shall serve a one-year term."
To amend Article IV, Section 5, b. Vice Chairperson to read in part:
"The Vice Chairperson shall be elected by the College Senate during a meeting of the College Senate in May. The Vice Chairperson shall assume office on June 1 and shall serve a one-year term as Vice Chairperson. On the following June 1, the Vice Chairperson of the College Senate succeeds as Chairperson of the College Senate to serve a one-year term as Chairperson....
To amend, Article III, Section 3, Senate Secretary to read:
"The Senate Secretary shall be a member of the faculty. The Executive Committee shall serve as a nominating committee for the election of the College Senate Secretary. It shall prepare a list of at least one candidate for that position and shall report its slate to the College Senate in time for the election of officers."
To amend Article IV, Section 6, Executive Committee, to eliminate the sentence reading:
"During the months of October, November and December, the incoming College Senate Chairperson shall serve as a non-voting ex officio member of the committee" and to modify the final two sentences of the section to read: "The Executive Committee shall serve as a nominating committee for the election of the College Senate Vice Chairperson. It shall prepare a list of at least one candidate for that position and shall report its slate to the College Senate in time for the election of officers."
To amend Article IV, Section 5. e, Parliamentarian to read in part:
"A Parliamentarian, not necessarily a member of the Senate, shall be appointed by the College Senate Chairperson at the first meeting of the academic year."
Implementation process: Normally the terms of the Senate Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary would come to an end on December 31st, 2001. However, in order to assume some continuity of service and to assist in the transition to a new electoral cycle, the following is to take place.
Since the current Chairperson of the Senate will be on sabbatical leave during the spring semester, the Senate will elect a Chairperson to serve for the spring semester 2002. That election will take place during the December 2001 meeting of the Senate. The current Vice Chair and Secretary will have their terms extended and will continue to serve through June 30, 2002.
In May 2002, the Senate will elect a Chairperson for a one-year term, a Vice Chairperson to serve a one-year term in that capacity and then to serve as Chairperson in the subsequent year, and a Secretary to serve a one-year term.
In May 2003 and thereafter, the Senate will elect a Vice Chairperson and a Secretary.
The new Chairperson in January 2002 shall appoint a Parliamentarian at the first Senate meeting of the calendar year. The new Chairperson in July 2002 shall appoint a Parliamentarian at the first Senate meeting of the academic year.
