Faculty and Professionals Affairs Committee

Motion to approve Evaluation of Teaching Report of Task Force with amendments submitted by committee March 28, 2003:

The Faculty and Professional Affairs Committee approve of the aforementioned report and will move that the Senate adopt the report, if the following changes are made:

On page 1, Section I of the process, sentences 2, 3, and 4 should be moved to the introductory section, i.e., "Since teaching is best evaluated by its effects upon students, various measures of student change-academic achievement, critical thinking skills, attitudes-should be included if at all possible."  The committee found this sentence and the subsequent two supporting sentences to be ambiguous regarding assessing and attributing these qualities to any one class.  However since they are goals of the entire college experience, it is appropriate that they should be in the introduction to the document.

On page 2, Section III, Part C (Faculty Peers), subsection 1, lines 3 and 4, which state, "Selection of the observer is to be made according to departmental procedures."  The committee decided to change it to read: "Selection of the observer is to be mutually acceptable to both the faculty member and the department."  The committee changed the wording for the sake of clarity.

If the Senate feels that these changes cannot be made, the committee will not be able to recommend adoption of the report.
