SIFE Teams at SUNY Fredonia

For the past four semesters, SIFE has played an active role in the lives of many students here at Fredonia. Headed by Dr. Franklin Krohn, various teams have made a difference in the local community, to area elementary and high school students, and even to other students at the college. Some +of the current projects include:

Primary and Secondary School projects

1.Karing For Kids

Marketing students interested in the development and promotion of the Chautauqua Daycare structured this group, Karing for Kids. The members of this group include Justina Kilbourn, Yolanda Clemons, Dorothy Jacobs, Lori Marshall, and Tina Zboch. Their specific goals include raising funds for Chautauqua Daycare Inc., and to teach the staff about fundraising techniques for future use. In order to achieve these goals the group plans to hold a Benefit Auction at the Williams Center at the college on March 7, 1998. At this Benefit Auction, the daycare will set up a demonstration table for promotional purposes. They also plan to set up Guidelines of past and future fund-raisers for the Daycare staff to follow and learn. The group is seeking the professional Auctioneer, Anthony (Jim) Tofil and all the money raised will be donated to the Daycare.

2. The Rec Group

This "Rec" group has a very demanding yet reachable and beneficial goal to help the Fredonia community renovate the recreational center. The marketing students behind this idea are Jen Tysiac, Dave Schulz, Kevin Mectzc, Brad Harte, and Lynn Pasquali. In order to accomplish this task, they plan to begin by getting together with High school students, the mayor, and the town board seeking help, suggestions, and permission. Their schedule shows that the rec. center is to be opened during the first or second week in April. With help from the Village of Fredonia, the group hopes to reach the Fredonia community as a whole and are striving to have a positive affect on the youth in the area.

3. Promoting Adult Learning

The team members that plan to promote adult learning are Kris Martin, Sandy Proper, and Krista P. Webdale. Their plan is to increase the number of adult learners and volunteers for the Literacy Volunteers of America. In order to do this, they have constructed promotional flyers to post and letters to send out to various places. Some of these hundred places include churches, schools, clubs, and businesses in Chautauqua county. They also plan to promote this through radio announcements and articles in campus and off campus papers including the Leader and Pennysaver. The followed schedule was to have the letters sent out by Monday February 16th. They feel that the letters and flyers should generate a response, and even if they only reach one person, the work will have been successful and worth it. Once again, the group is working with the Literacy Volunteers of Chautauqua County, Inc. : (716) 366-4438

4. Steps for Toys

This team known as Steps for Toys consists of Adam Pearson, Kelly D'ambrosia, and Patrick Farrington. Their main objective is to mentor students at STEPS job training, and to teach a class about job skills. They plan to allocate a good amount of their time to mock interviews and teaching how to develop resumes and such things. It was decided that the best time for them to do this was on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12:30 - 2:30, starting as soon as they possibly could. With the plan being to reach about 20 students, they believe that they will achieve more knowledge in the greatest way possible, teaching. The team plans to receive cooperation, help, and support from STEPS teachers and the school district.

5. Know Names

The team with "Know Name" apparently has "Know Goal". That is that the goal is to help high school students "know" about proper selling techniques. The team members involved with this include Dan Consilo, Bob Dombrowski, Jerry Cross, and Brian Sampson. The selling techniques the students need to know are those having to do with selling magazine subscriptions. While high school fund-raisers always include such things as selling magazines, it is not often that someone stands up and teaches any styles or guidelines. This group plans to do so through any means possible including role-playing, showing videos, and explaining about selling in general. Hopefully the "Know Names" will have "Know" problems with this.

6. Between Bells

This group, in the tradition of the Fredonia High School Fundraisers, has decided to work with Brocton students in grades 10 through 12. These SIFE members attempting to teach a better understanding of the marketing basics are Kelly Gillen, Jeremie Dunning, Marcie Clauss, Erin Cave, and Beth Ranke. There specific goals are to have the class come up with products, promote them through posters and morning announcements, and sell their products. To achieve these goals, they plan to split the class into groups, have each group create a product, one sign, and one announcement to promote their product. After selling the product, March 2 each group must give a presentation explaining their product and what they have learned from the experience. Between Bells hopes to affect the whole Brocton school system and make money for the school. They also hope that the cooperation from the teacher grading the students will excite them and help them show initiative.

7. Shooting Star

The shooting stars are shooting to help promote and develop the learn and serve program at Fredonia High School. The team involved consists of Jennifer Washburn, John Grandits, Don Jacobus, Chris Dufey, and Mike Liberatore. They plan to improve the current layout and newsletters by writing and editing articles themselves and by creating more community service contacts in the community. Along with their BI-weekly meetings at the school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, each team within the group will meet weekly with the shooting stars and also on their own. The plan is to exhibit the results in a presentation as another attempt to reach a large audience.

8. Bears

This team that has continued for years is now run by the marketing geniuseses known as Darren Weinstock, Jason Magee, Robin Mazar, Julie Peworchick, and David Merrick. As in the past, the Bears have planned to teach free enterprise through advertising. They plan to do so by teaching two eigth grade classes at Brocton and asking them to create ads to persuade other kids not to smoke. Their schedule includes talking to the students about advertising, working in groups, having them create ads, and video taping the ads. During the next class, the video will be showed and a decision will be made about which is the best advertisment. The final day will consist of a pizza party and a monetary donation being made to the American Cancer Society and to the winning group in Fredonia States name. In order to assess the amount of impact the marketers had on the class, the students will be tested on the last day and a comparison will be made with the test given to them on the first day.
