The Rascher Saxophone Quartet was founded in 1969 by Sigurd M.
Rascher, the foremost saxophone artist of his time. Today it includes his
daughter, Carina Rascher, Harry-Kinross White, Bruce Weinberger, and Kenneth
Coon.
The Quartet has appeared at major concert halls in Europe and the U.S. including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Royal Festival Hall in London, The Philharmonic in St. Petersburg, Schauspielhaus in Berlin, Tonhalle in Zurich, and Musikverein in Vienna., among others. The Quartet has inspired over 200 composers to dedicate music to them, including Berio, Bergman, Bialas, Denhoff, Donatoni, Firsowa, Glass, Gubaidulina, Hallffter, Haubenstock-Ramati, Kaipainen, Keuris, de Leeuw, Maros, Raxach, Sandstrom, Xenakis, and Zechlin. All of these composers have shared in the enthusiasm for the four musicians' unique homogeneous tone quality, virtuosity, and dynamic interpretation of old and new music.
These composers and others have also written many new works for saxophone quartet and orchestra which have brought the ensemle into contact with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors.
They have also made recent recordings for the Philips, BIS, and Elektra Nonesuch labels.
