About the Program:
THE STRING EXPERIENCE is a seminar for high school violinists, violists, cellists and bassists that brings you in contact with Fredonia’s string faculty. You will be given the chance to improve performance and practice techniques, interact with other string players, and attend a recital with our distinguished faculty artists. The atmosphere is designed to be a fun, supportive learning environment for students, but teachers and parents are also encouraged to attend - we hope you’ll join us for this exciting event.
String players will have the opportunity to work in small sessions with conservatory-trained Fredonia faculty, developing performance skills, working on issues of stage fright and the audition process, improving technical skills such as shifting techniques, intonation, octaves & thirds, and more.
This year’s String Experience focuses on the unique relationship that is fostered between students and teachers at Fredonia. College students at Fredonia have frequent one-on-one interaction with faculty and in celebration of our focus on teaching, our gala concert will feature a Brahms sextet collaboration of faculty and college student members. After a day of honing your craft, you will be treated to this performance of the Brahms G Major sextet, as well as music of Rossini and Schubert.
The Free Improv Session with David Rudge teaches you ways to free your playing and explore new possibilities on your instrument. It is an introduction for string players who have never improvised, and will provide more opportunities for those who have had previous experience. Students will move away from the printed page and explore making music in the moment using string and other "world music" instruments.
We are excited to announce the arrival of our new full-time viola professor, David Rose. He will be joining Janet Sung, Natasha Farny and Harry Jacobson for the teaching and performing aspects of the day.
Enjoy our campus tour and discover the secrets that only Fredonia undergraduates know! Explore the campus at the height of its colorful fall foliage: tour highlights include a visit to the university gym, the I.M. Pei-designed library, the student center, and the Starbucks cafe.
