Fredonia Woodwind Quintet
A faculty ensemble in residence at the School of Music at the State University of New York, College at Fredonia, the FWQ's annual tours of New York take them to all corners of the state, playing community concerts and giving educational performances and workshops. The quintet has developed many imaginative educational programs both for community organizations and for public schools in partnership with the Arts Council for Chautauqua County Arts-in-Educaton program and the Western New York Institute for Arts-in-Education. In many cases, these programs have involved cooperative program development with classes in social studies, language arts and science, as well as music.
Susan Royal, Professor of Flute at the State University of New York at
Fredonia, performs regularly with the Buffalo Philharmonic, having
performed in Carnegie Hall on their New York State tour and on a Buffalo
Philharmonic recording released in 2003. Dr. Royal has been a concerto
soloist with the Knoxville Symphony, Ars Nova, Stony Brook Symphony,
Erie Philharmonic, and the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, the
latter two of which she has been a member since 1983. She has performed
with the Chautauqua Symphony, the New Haven Symphony, the Bach Aria
Group at the Bach Aria Festival, and at the Roycroft, Bach and Beyond,
June in Buffalo, and the New College Music Festivals. Dr. Royal, a
member of the Fredonia Woodwind Quintet since 1983, has performed on
National Public Radio in Boston, toured Europe with the Yale
Philharmonia and performed a solo recital tour of Japan. She recently
recorded for Mode Records, NYC, and collaborated on a CD entitled
Freedom Flight, which was featured on a recital tour of Puerto Rico in
2001. She has published numerous articles and has been a performer,
panelist, coordinator and/or judge at National Flute Association
conventions since 1977. Recent NFA performances include a presentation
by Samuel Baron on Bach arias at the '97 convention in New York, and a
world premiere at the '99 convention in Atlanta. She has a Bachelor of
Music degree from Ithaca College, Master of Music degree from Yale
University and a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from SUNY - Stony
Brook. She has studied with Marcel Moyse, Julius Baker, Samuel Baron,
Thomas Nyfenger, and in London, with Trevor Wye.
Oboist Sarah Hamilton also plays English Horn with the Erie Philharmonic, the Western New York Chamber Players, and the double reed consort, OBOHIO. She has been a soloist with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, the Fredonia College Symphony and Wind Symphony. She has held positions with the Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra, the Windsor Symphony, the Britt Festivals Orchestra and the New England Music Camp. She has also performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Chautauqua Symphony. In the summer of 1997, she gave a solo recital at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Evanston, Il. She has a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Western Ontario, a Master of Music degree from Wayne State University, and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Ohio State University.
Clarinetist
Marcy D. Bacon has been serving the SUNY-Fredonia community
as adjunct clarinet faculty since 2001. She earned a Bachelor of
Music in Performance degree from Portland State University in
Portland, Oregon, and a Master of Music in Performance degree from
Michigan State University, where she studied with Elsa
Ludewig-Verdher. and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music, where she studies with Kenneth Grant. She
has participated in master classes with Eric Mandat, Joan Tower and
David Shifrin, where she was heard and well received. Marcy
performs with the Western New York Chamber Orchestra, as well as
freelance engagements around Western New York. She has performed
previously with the Vancouver (WA) Symphony and Hochstein Music
Educators Wind Band. She can be heard on the Oregon Catholic
Press label performing church music and compositions by Jacob
Avshalomov.
Marc Guy has performed all over the world as the hornist with the Annapolis Brass Quintet. He plays with the Erie Philharmonic and the Fredonia Brass Quintet, and is Principal Horn with the Western New York Chamber Players. He has also played in the Baltimore, Chicago, and Chautauqua Symphonies. In his studies at the Peabody Conservatory, Northwestern University, and SUNY at Stony Brook, his teachers included Dale Clevenger, Robert Pierce, and William Purvis.
Laura Koepke has performed with many of New York's finest
orchestras, including the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of
St. Luke's, American Composers Orchestra, New York Pops, American
Symphony Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic, New York City Opera, and
the Westchester Philharmonic. Since 1998, Ms. Koepke has been
a member of the internationally acclaimed woodwind quintet, Quintet
of the Americas. Two recent recordings with the quintet include
Dancing in Columbia (MSR Classics) and Karel Husa-Recollections (New
World Records.) Ms. Koepke has performed as a guest artist
with Zephyros Winds, North Country Chamber Players, Sequitur, and
the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Also a member of the
Curiously Strong Winds, Ms. Koepke has performed at the Bard
Festival, Bang on a Can, and Festival of the Hamptons. Other
festival appearances include the Lincoln Center Festival, Bar Harbor
Music Festival, Maverick Concerts, and the Weekend of Chamber Music
Festival. Ms. Koepke joined the SUNY Fredonia music faculty in 2007.
Previous teaching positions include New York University, Manhattan
School of Music Pre-college, Aaron Copland School of music at Queens
College, and Western Connecticut State University. She graduated
from Baldwin-Wallace College and holds a Masters Degree and Artist
Diploma from Yale University School of Music, where she studied with
Stephen Maxym and Frank Morelli.
