Bio:
Born in Miami and raised in southern Illinois, tubaist Raymond Stewart has established an active musical career in New York City since 1985 and now resides both there and in Fredonia, NY. He received his high school diploma from the Interlochen Arts Academy, BM from the University of Miami School of Music, and MM from the Manhattan School of Music. He is equally at home on the concert stage, recording studio, in musical theater, on tour, and in academia. He is currently serving in his 6th year as Assistant Professor of Music at SUNY Fredonia College where he teaches the tuba studio, conducts Concert Band, has conducted the musical (BARNUM, Spring 2005) and has lectured in World Music. He also serves as principal tuba of the American Composers Orchestra in NYC, the world’s only orchestra dedicated to the infinite variety of American music which performs regularly at Carnegie Hall. As a member of the internationally acclaimed brass chamber music group Meridian Arts Ensemble (co-founded NYC in 1987), Mr. Stewart has appeared in 49 states , 25 countries, and 4 continents at countless music conservatories, performance venues and festivals, and has worked with numerous composers including Frank Zappa, Milton Babbitt, Elliott Carter, and Elliott Sharp. He has recorded 8 cds with the Meridians on the Dutch independent label, Channel Classics. Reviewing a Meridian Arts Ensemble performance September 2002, the New York Times wrote about Mr. Stewart’s work: “…the tuba lines were cleanly and precisely articulated.” Mr. Stewart has also performed and/or recorded with numerous diverse musical entities including theatre and film director Julie Taymor, Academy Award winning film score composer Elliot Goldenthal, jazz pianist Toshiko Akyoshi, Brasil's living choros/bandolim legend Joel Nascimento and Brasil's musica popular diva Marisa Monte, the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra and Rochester Philharmonic, New York City Ballet, New York City Opera, American Ballet Theatre, Broadway (STATE FAIR, CANDIDE), the off-Broadway hit JUAN DARIEN, movie soundtracks (SPHERE, TWO FAMILY HOUSE, TITUS, BRIDE OF THE WIND), TV jingle ads (AT&T, DUNKIN' DONUTS), the Walt Disney World Company, and 80's rock icons DURAN DURAN. At the age of 19, he was the featured solo sousaphonist in the international touring company of the Broadway musical BARNUM. Mr. Stewart can be heard on the EMI, Channel Classics, Sony Classical, CRI, Argo, and Knitting Factory Works labels, among others. His principal teachers have included Toby Hanks and John Stevens.
